New grad offered job in ED & mom/baby just wanting some advice

Nurses General Nursing

Published

i just recently graduated in december with my bsn & passed nclex last week :) i've been offered a job in mom/baby & the ed. i love them both. what i would like to know from all of you experienced nurses, is your opinions on the two jobs. i have made out lists (pro/con) for each dept. but would love to hear others input.

thanks a bunch!

Specializes in Hospice.

ED will allow you to branch out to several areas should you choose............mother/baby (im assuming postpartum) not so much. Good luck!

Personally, I LOVE OB in general....mother/baby...labor and antenatal. Where is your heart? Both are radically different.......OB nurses are unique...most nurses either love OB, hate it, or are scared of it.

Best of Luck :)

Specializes in L&D,Lactation.

L&D and ED attract similar personalities, type A, that like the drama. I think it might be easier to go from the ED with the skill set learned there, to OB, than the other way around. If you knew for sure that you wanted to only work L&D then I would say just go there, but if you like both and hoping they are really busy units where you get to see and learn alot, I might start for at least a few years in the ED

Specializes in ER/ float.

Congrats on the job opportunities. Just curious, why not share with many of the other new grads that post here on a regular basis just how you landed two job offers at the same time? Did you network(know people?) previously work in the facility? What state are you in? I already have my offers however have some experience also. This info might help others.

rntim49...since you asked i will share how i ended up with two job offers in the same week.

i graduated from a bsn program that is connected to a major hospital in central llinois. i have no previous experience & have never worked for them before. all i did was apply. however, with the ed position, i had done my elective in the ed so i knew some nurses but i hadn't had any contact with any of the people who interviewed me. i honestly just think i got lucky. i didn't participate in any "we pay some of your tuition for your time after completing school" programs either. i waited to start applying for jobs until mid november & had a few interviews in december & one last week. the first two interviews, i never heard from after, the last two were the offers. i really don't know what to say as far as "advice" to others. just keep applying! also after each interview i sent a follow up email (the same day) thanking them for their time and for meeting with me to discuss whatever position i had interviewed for. i think this is a good way to keep you in their mind.

I'll take the L&D job as a new grad so I can focus on one specialty/area. ER might be too fast-paced and you could be overwhelmed if you're just starting out. The down side is that you might be hooked on L&D nursing for a long time and you can't shift quickly to other specialty areas in the future.

Follow your heart. Whatever you decide on, congratulations and good luck!
