Acute care jobs for ADN new grads are very limited in the Houston metro area. All of the larger systems are BSN-only now. You may have better luck with outlying community facilities. All of the larger systems except St. Lukes have hospitals in the Katy area. Your best bet would be to contact those employers directly. I don't know of any LTACs in that area.

Hca hires new grads. I've been learning a lot.

A patient told me that she had recently taken her mom to one of the nearby memorial Hermann campuses. She said the facility felt more like a hotel, it was newer, nicer etc. But that she didn't like the majority of the nurses and felt there was a cultural clash, if u will. Apparently she came to our facility for a second opinion, believe it or not, because she felt the drs were very scalpel happy and did t try various other avenues to heel her moms infected leg. To my knowledge, the leg is healing nicely at our place and mom and daughter seem well adjusted with us.

Who knows.

Also, how good is your husband health ins/ benefits?

I'd be lying if I said I liked mine. I opted out and use my husband's.

I'd say from an ethical and *personal* financial perspective, nurses have a better go round in a nonprofit system/facility. That only means they don't pay out shareholders and often do research / a few pro bono cares. They still make a profit, of course. But the facility is required to essentially invest in its facility, employees (aka pay) , technology and whatnot.

Most new grad RN positions in the med center area pay at least $25/h starting out. Of course most of us new grads start on nights so you are looking at shift diffs that equal out around $30-$33/hour.

I am a new grad, May 2013. I have my RN license and am having an awful time finding a job. I have great letters of recommendation from my clinical instructors and my resume looks good. For some reason I fill out thousands of resumes but can't even get a call back, let alone and interview. Does anyone out there have any advice for me? Thanks!

Here in Houston it really depends on if you have your BSN or ADN. Most major systems (Methodist, St. Luke's, MDA, TCH, Harris Health) all require a BSN. Hermann still had "BSN preferred" on an application I saw for one of the satellite campuses, but TMC campus requires a BSN as well as the one in The Woodlands, although I was told by a nursing director about The Woodlands requirement, I haven't seen it for myself yet. There are very few hospitals that will accept a new grad ADN now since they are all magnet or trying to achieve magnet status. Right now you are also in between application periods. There are still a few postings for GN positions, but all the hospitals should be opening up the applications for the January GN residencies soon. It's still pretty competitive out there though, so be prepared with a plan just in case you don't land one of the slots right off the bat. I'm still interviewing for a couple of positions that start in October. If they don't work out then ill be in the January pool as well!

Do you happen to know which hospitals will be opening the new grad residency postings soon? I believe MD Anderson will open it in October but that's all I have heard. The interviews that you have now, did you get them by following up with HR or did they call you direct?

I'm a new grad RN ADN and was lucky enough to get one interview but unfortunately no job offer resulted.

Your best option for staying in touch with plans & schedule for new grad programs is to maintain contact with the organization's nurse recruiters. These are expensive programs. Many organizations operate on a fiscal year that begins in the fall - so they may not even know whether there will even be a program, or how many slots there are - until the budget is finalized.

PP is correct about BSN new grads only at those TMC-based facilities. Luckily, Houston also has a very large number of suburban & community hospitals as well and these may be more open to ADN grads. I encourage you to accept a job offer if you receive one rather than wait around for a 'new grad' program.

I believe that Hermann will have a Jan GN program and that they accept applications for ADN's, but I have a few friends that currently work there and told me that it is hard to get into their internship with no previous experience without a BSN, so I'm not sure, but it's worth applying. As the pp stated, I would continue sending out your résumé and replying to job postings, then follow up with the recruiters.

As far as the interviews I have had, I have gotten calls or emails in response to the application I submitted online for the GN residencies.

my husband and i are planning to move to houston...what is the job outlook for New grads RN BSN at the present time...i am here in houston currently and my husband is in NJ...i am trying to understand where to look for jobs and who is hiring..im in the pearland area.
