New Grad from New York wanting to move to California

Published

Hello everyone. I have just graduated from a nursing program in New York in which I have earned my BSN. I graduated May 19, 2017 and took my NCLEX July 11,2017. I checked the quick results and have passed and am now just waiting for my license to come in the mail. I really wanted to move to California and transfer my license as soon as possible. Does anyone have any advice or experience in this area? I have no family in California but have dreamed of moving there after I had graduated nursing school. I'm just not sure if I apply to positions will they consider me if I have a New York address at the moment? Also would it be maybe better to start off as a travel nurse and if so what are some good California agencies to go with? Thank you!

Oh okay I see thank you! I just requested mine with the link you provided so thank you!!! Oh that's awesome! I graduated from stony brook school of nursing! Let me know how the application process goes for you!! What else is exactly needed? I know they need your license and transcripts do we have to wait for the license I guess? Cuz that's gonna take a while. I took my boards July 11th so I won't get the license for another few weeks but I wanna submit my info asap

Sure, you can request cards from CA BRN if you are in no rush. Same FD-258 cards.

I also did the nursing internship at Stony Brook last summer...small world.

Basically you need endorsement application (which you can just submit online), 2 x 2 passport photo from walgreens or wherever which can be uploaded and submitted with your endorsement application online, fingerprint cards, transcripts mailed from your school, and then the licensure verification application.

You can submit the licensure verification application or use the NURSYS Verification Application (Nursys®) which is probably easier. Not entirely sure how it works but I think it can be done without receiving your official license...as long as your name pops up when you search it.

:)If you're from New York where you're used to walking and pedestrian friendly things, you'll not find that in California. It's more driver friendly. I read an article about someone wanting to move from New York to LA and the person said, "If you like to walk, you'll find people in Calfornia won't care about you wanting to cross as they just want to get where they want vs. New York, drivers wait for you". I'd like to move to New York once I get my BSN for the rain and snow, but I can't accept the cost of living so WA state it is lol :)

I just came from California and I know a lot of nurses who graduated nursing school in california and had to leave the state to get experience. Then came back to california as either travel nurses or full time nurses. So your best option imo would be to get a job N NY, get a year experience (your CA license will take 6 months to a year to get anyways) then relocate as a Travelor and go then go staff. I'm not saying it's impossible to get a job strait away there but it kinda is. You have to remember everyone wants to move to or go to California lol. Everyone wants that coushy dr office job out there too. So if your putting out applications apply locally and to Cali and see what happens. But I'd do what I suggested tbh. Its what I did.

Most places require a license in hand in CA, I havent seen one that doesnt. Licensing will take 3 months, not 6... being that your from CA I think you probably know where your going...

Have you submitted your endorsement application yet?

Hey not yet. I got fingerprinted and got my photos I just have to finish completing the application and get my transcript sent. I'm wondering do I send the transcript directly from my university to CA or should I mail everything together myself? Also the $100 application I'm waiting to get paid so that I can pay and submit my application. How about you? Have you submitted all of your stuff? How were the boards?

Hey-I passed which I was very happy about! I've done everything except fingerprints. Make sure you have the transcripts sent directly from your school...Also contact someone from the registrar to fill out page 13 part B (you have to fill out part A) of the endorsement application because that needs to be sent with the transcript

For page 12 part two do you have to send this to the licensure board to fill out?

Thank you so much for that! I was really hoping for a good response to give me some hope because I really want to work there. And yes like you said it doesn't have be Santa Monica right away that can come with time. I just want to move there. Thank you again! By the way do you know the requirements for transferring licenses. My New York license still hasn't come in the mail

Heres a tip, try looking for job fairs in the general area you want to be in and outside of it as well. You can get face to face with recruiters and find out which ones will take new graduates. Some places are in such need they will reach out to you despite being a new grad. Research Native American Reservations, find facilities there. I know many people who were able to start as new grads in popular departments that are even though to get in to in general (like L&D) by going to the reservations or rural areas.

Hey have you submitted your endorsement application yet? There's a section page 12 part two that says the nursing board has to fill out?
