New Grad Jobs

U.S.A. Oregon

Published

Hi Guys!

I am graduating in March and was wondering if any of the following hospitals hire new grads. I know of Adventist's and Legacy Health's RN Residency programs, but I am wondering about the other hospitals.

Oregon Health & Science University

Adventist Medical Center

Kaiser Permanente Sunnyside Medical Center

Kaiser Permanente Westside Medical Center

Providence St. Vincent Medical Center

Providence Portland Medical Center

Providence Milwaukie

Providence Willamette Falls

Legacy Emanuel

Legacy Good Samaritan

Legacy Meridian Park Medical Center

Legacy Mount Hood Medical Center

Specializes in CVICU CCRN.

I wish I had more information for you but it seems to vary by region. I would recommend reaching out to the recruiters directly. Good luck!

Heard someone say the VA is really short staffed.

Hi! I'm possibly moving from Az where for new grads it's virtually impossible to get a job without a BSN. I'm wondering if that is the same with Oregon? Do you need the BSN to get hired in hospitals? I will be in the process, but more than likely won't have it completely finished by the time we move there. Thanks!

Hi all,

I thought I would answer some of your questions. I have lived in Portland my entire life, and have worked in health care in some sort of fashion for 7 years. I would like to point out knowing a manager or having a friend working in a hospital helps a lot. Oregon is saturated with nurses and schools: 18 ADN schools (for profit included in this number) and 10 BSN programs. A short drive away there is one ADN program and one BSN program in Washington as well. Every couple of months new graduate nurses are let loose. The hospitals are also tightening up their BSN requirements, so another layer of competition is being added. Here is what I have heard or experienced in terms of hospitals hiring, and remember this isn't the be all end all, perseverance and knowing people help a lot in the search for a job. Recruiters (HR) are usually not nurses, but are the gate keepers for electronic applications, and determine if nurses have the right amount of experience. Knowing people helps bypass the recruiters, and managers can pull your applications with a referral…so network!!!

Kaiser: Now requiring a BSN, and wants 9 months experience. However, it seems like they want more than 9 months experience.

OHSU: BSN only, and they hire quite a few of their graduates from their nursing programs for the internships, or nurses with some experience who already work there get into their internships as well if they want to change specialties.

Providence Oregon: By 2018 all nurses will need to have a BSN to work there. They want a year or more experience.

Legacy: Year of experience required. The versant program usually takes 45-50 new nurses out of 800 applications, and BSN's are being chosen, last round only 4 ADN's were accepted.

Adventist: BSN not a requirement, one year of nursing experience is required. Internship for new grads

Peacehealth: Takes new grads, and BSN is not a requirement at this time, multiple new grad programs

Tuality: Takes new grads, BSN is not a requirement

Salem hospital: BSN required, one year experience required. Internship for new grads with BSN

Market is tough here, and especially since we have such a huge boom of people moving here it seems a little harder as well. Experience can be had in SNF's, home health or rehab settings. Hope this helps.

Portland Adventist Residency Program has open applications right now, until Nov 18th only. That's for the March 7th, 2016 cohort. They will also open another application period the beginning of April or May for the August cohort.

Legacy's Residency Program will open applications around April for the August cohort.

As far as I know, Providence doesn't have a designated new grad program.

Specializes in Surgical/Trauma ICU.

I am graduating in Los Angeles with my BSN in August and am interested in relocating to Oregon. Would you be able to give me more information about Bay Area Hospital's new grad program? Thanks!

Great info. thank you! I would love to know what your thoughts are on Bend Oregon? RN with BSN from AZ moving next summer. We want to go out there some time soon to narrow things down BUT any thoughts or advise would be greatly appreciate.

And/Or other than the nursing board, are there any IG accounts to follow or blogs with good true and in the now from family, kids, living etc.

Thanks again!!!

FaithI7, are you graduating next summer? If you are considering moving to Bend as a new grad it will be VERY DIFFICULT to find an acute care job. St. Charles hires new grads into Med/Surg and Ortho/Neuro only, and they have a strong preference for their local ADN graduates from COCC. If you know a manager there you may have better luck. St. Charles is also the only hospital in town and they own all the surrounding hospitals within a commutable distance (all about 1 hr away from Bend with the exception of the Redmond facility, much longer drive in the snow). I graduated in May from a non-Oregon BSN program; I've been applying to acute care positions here since April with a very strong resume and several years of health care experience and cannot even get an interview for acute care. I've had a few interviews for outpatient clinics within the last month. Some other things to consider are: rental housing is difficult to find and becoming increasingly unaffordable and the locals are generally unhappy about all the new people moving into town. However, the town itself is great, especially if you enjoy the outdoors and having 4 seasons.

Thank you so much!!! Graduate in May (RN/BSN). We had (have) a few places in mind Bend, Colorado Springs and Maryland ( various reasons) as any other family we have our "list" lol.

We've been researching this for months and will continue to do so and between many responses such as yours {THANK YOU} it has helped so much to get a handle on it. Bend does seem incredibly difficult. I'm sure it will come down to where I get a job offer.

GOOD luck out in Bend and thank you so much for taking the time to respond, truly helps!

You're welcome :) I wish I had known those things before I moved here. My SO and I moved here to be close to his family and I knew it would be a challenge to find a job, but I didn't think it would be this hard. Congrats on your upcoming graduation and good luck with your job hunt!
