New Grad, Jobhunting has become a nightmareee

Hi, i'm a new grad looking for an RN position for like about 6 months. It has become a nightmare jobhunting. I'm going from place to place but i always get the same answer " i need experience". It's very frustrating to know that there is a nursing shortage and yet ppl aren't hiring new grads. How am i suppose to get experience if no one is hiring. And to top it all of, i recently encountered a family emergency in which i can't afford being unemployed. Can someone please tell me of any hospitals hiring new grads in NY or NJ??? I would be willing to work in any department. Thankss.

Sorry I live in MI. It's bad here too. I started applying a few months before graduation...now I am one month past and so far I have my first interview next week. Hopefully that's the one I will get because I really like the hospital.

Try SUNY Upstate and hospitals in western NY. They are hiring new grads there.

It is the same out here, I am in San Diego. It has been VERY frustrating!! I am applying to many jobs, even ones that are not "new grad" but I get the " I see you are a new grad and we are not hiring them right now" I am sorry, I thought I went to school to become an RN and I am an RN so why do I have to be placed in a new grad position, I think I am smart enough to catch on quickly on a unit, just give me a preceptor/mentor for a few weeks. I can't say enough how much of a low blow it is to go to school all those years and hear everywhere that there is a nursing shortage, but then not get a job.... I feel like I am living in the twilight zone!!! Sorry.. had to vent!! :angryfire

your considered a "new grad" for a reason. It's different being in school and in clinicals than being on the floor with your own patients. They still need to orient you. A seasoned RN will pick up within 4 weeks or less but a new grad needs weeks/months of training before they are on their own.

Find out when there are meetings for nurse leaders. In California, there is the ACNL. I think ONE/NJ is for New Jersey. Go to one of their meetings. You will be able to network with the nurse managers etc. Bring your resume. It is a great way to get your foot in the door. You need to start thinking outside of the box. Get a nurse assistant position at the hospital in order to get a relationship with them etc. Try to get a job with a registry or a nursing home just to keep your skills up. I know it's hard but you need to keep a good attitude and get to know people some how, some way. Good luck!

I live in NJ right outside Philadelphia and it is a nightmare here too... There are a million nursing students applying and graduating at the same time in the tri state area Delaware/New Jersey/ Pennsylvannia. If you are open to anything maybe you can squeeze yourself in somewhere, but it is even hard for that. I have been reading some blogs and it seems by some peoples accounts that TX is where to be right now if your a new grad.

You know what i hate, is that when we started nursing school it was a field that had a shortage... Well now that we are graduated we can't find jobs becuase of this dam economy... ug! I just graduated in May and am searching for a job in the Maryland area. Anyone heard of any openings???
