New Grad Job Offer... What do you think?

I was just recently offered a job in the rural midwest. Pulmonary with hospital rounding and call (they couldn't tell me how much as its a new position.) I will be their first NP.

They originally offered me 90k/yr + rvu bonuses with full benefits, a 3 year contract and 10k sign on bonus. 27 pto days and 3 CME days and $3,000

I told my recruiter I would like a shorter contract with $100K and more CME days and maybe a relocation bonus as well.

They came back with a 2 year contract, $95k year 1 and $100k year 2 + rvu bonus. Same $10k sign on bonus, and still 3days/$3000 for CME.

I happen to think this is pretty good considering most of my classmates are having trouble getting interviews. However, I Just don't think 3 CME days will be enough. They want an answer in 7 days. Would you re-counter offer for more CME days?

Take it! You state your classmates are having difficulty getting a job. You are not in a position to be real picky as a new grad NP. Also, you don't need much CME as a new grad in your first 2 years. Most providers do online CME that they can do at home at any time, anyway.

I use Net CE. They have some decent offerings.

I wouldn't take a job based on CME time, and very few places give more than 3 days.

Most conferences are 3 days. And even if they are not, you'll want to leave by the 3rd day....

If the CME time is your only concern, then you're in good shape.

Much of the situation has to do with your "personal" situation:

1. How mobile are you relative to your financial obligations and aspirations? For example I have a family, but I also owe 160K in student loan debt. Although, I live in Florida (wages are relatively low) it is important for me to earn more money so moving to an independent practice state like Washington, Arizona, or a higher earning state like California (or even taking a job in someplace like UAE) isn't off the the table.

2. What is the penalty for breaking the contract? All contracts can be broken, (except for non compete) with a monetary penalty. Thus, if a contract had a 5k penalty for breaking, but a new job offer promised 25K more, it might make sense to break the contract. In any case you should have your own counsel evaluate any contract before signing.

Their offer sounds excellent! Aside from the salary, sign on bonus, RVU bonuses, number of PTO days, etc., a maximum of $3000 for CME is quite a bit. Is that over the terms of the full 2-year contract or per year? In either case, it is great and similar to what has already been said, there is the option of completing CME online. Plus, you are guaranteed a $5000 salary increase the following year. What may be more important than salary, etc., will be the clinical setting, especially if this is your first year of practice. You may, if you have not already, want to ask to shadow a provider. Good luck! ?
