New Grad why can't I get hired???

U.S.A. Ohio

I recently graduated from an ASN program, passed my boards and have started an online RN-BSN program. I have a Bachelors in another field. Why can I not find a job???? I have applied everywhere, Dayton, Columbus, Cincinnati, and nothing not even an interview. I had a recruiter look over my resume and she told me it looked good. What else can I do? I am starting to think I am never going to find a job. Also, I do not want to work in home health. I know myself and working in home health will make me not want to be a nurse and I don't want that to happen. Any suggestions???:nurse:

Specializes in Oncology/Haemetology/HIV.

Because there are few available, and many people with experience seeking them.

Because there are tons of other new grads out there applying for the same jobs you are applying for. Because there are people with years of experience applying for the same jobs you are.

You are doing yourself a disservice by refusing to work in home health.

I thought you had to have a year of experience to work in home health.

Specializes in Neuro Critical Care.

If you really want a hospital apply for any position possible....contingent, nights, rotating. Unfortunately you will need to shoot for the positions more experienced nurses are not interested in. Try specialty hospitals or rehab facilities just to get some experience. Hope you find one soon!

Specializes in critical care and LTC.

I know this is probably not what you are wanting to hear but it might make you feel a little better. As a nurse that does hiring for the company I am employed for I want to make sure when I hire a new grad that I don’t have too many orientating already I want it to be a good experience for both the employee & the employer. We don’t want it to be a bad experience and when you take on new grads it a commitment to be able to show them everything thoroughly & accurately

Specializes in LTC, OB/GYN, Primary Care.

Have you tried applying in LTC? I currently work at a nursing home and we have recently been hiring new grad RN's instead of LPN's to fill full time positions. Going in somewhere and applying in person dressed professionally is the only way I ever got a interview (and ultimately hired). I was also told that they want someone who currently is working whether it be heath care based or not. Don't give up! you will find something. I know most of my graduating class went through the same thing and most have found jobs!!

Specializes in Hospice, ONC, Tele, Med Surg, Endo/Output.

You can't get a job because hospitals are squeezing pennies until the buffalos poop!

Hey NurseHopefulInOhio,

I tried going in person to LTC facilities but no one is hiring. I'm in California, by the way. Although, I'm starting to consider moving back to Ohio soon. When you applied in person, did you ask to talk to anyone? Do you mind if I ask how you did it to get the hiring manager's attention? The places that I've visited don't seem to let me talk to anyone when I fill out the application in person.

I can feel your pain. I'm an RN with 20 plus years experience and currently in California. I'm from Ohio and want to return home to be with family but guess what?? No response to applications. None. I have spoke to travel companies that I have worked for in the past. The problem for me is I worry that the travel assignments might dry up after one or two assignments and then I'm up the creek without a paddle. I have a great paying job now soooo what to do? Good Luck to you!:)

Have you tried applying to internship programs at the hospitals? I work in one of the major hospitals in Columbus and they only hire new grads in the internship programs.

Specializes in Home care, Infection Disease.

I passed my NCLEX back in February and started applying right after. No one ever called me, and the ones I was able to talk to told me if I don't have a year experience I will not be considered, most Home Health are the same. So, rather than been jobless I got a Medical Assistant job at a medical office. I get pay less than an RN but more than a regular MA, so I am happy. i will continue my search until I get RN job but for now this have to do.
