New Grad finally got a job offer!!!! What do you think of the details?

Specializes in Critical Care (ICU/CVICU).

Hey guys, so I was FINALLY offered a job!!!! I'm so happy. Need your insight in making sure it's a good decision. These are the details:

Pros:

  • Salaried position (I'm not sure if it's a pro or con)
  • Starting Salary $105,000 (I initially asked for $100,000, I live in Houston)
  • 4 weeks PTO
  • 7 Paid holidays and 1 "floating" holiday (well, technically salary pay, right?)
  • $2500 CME reimbursement yearly
  • between 16 to 24 patients a day.
  • I will be in a team of 4 NPs/PAs every day, so I won't ever be alone.
  • Medical & Dental coverage included. Disability, etc. (401k available after 6 months)
  • Seems relatively laid back with flexible dress code. Very "close family" feel.
  • Malpractice covered
  • Call every 6-7 weeks (week long).

Cons:

  • 5 days a week job (I have NEVER had a M-F job EVER, I have a feeling I will hate this)
  • 40-45 minute commute back and forth
  • I don't think licensing fees/DEA is covered
  • CME days are not separate from PTO.
  • Adults only, will not see Pediatrics (and I love kids).
  • More of a rehab/group home facility, so not much "urgent care" type skills which I love.

That's all I can think of at the moment. What do y'all think? Is there something that I am missing?

Hope to hear from you all soon.

Wow the pros sound pretty good to me. I guess the question would be if the no pedi patients and drive are a deal breaker for you. If not and you think you would enjoy this place and it would be a good learning environment then I think its a solid offer. Congrats on the offer!

Specializes in Hospice.

Sounds good! It sounds like it's not your ideal population though?

Specializes in Critical Care (ICU/CVICU).

Thanks guys. what do you think about taking this job, and volunteering my time at a free family practice clinic once a month. That way, i can still have SOME experience in kids, etc. This Job is a neuro/family practice gig

Specializes in ER, Public Health, Community, PMHNP.

sounds good to me give it a try and see how it goes. Good Luck!!

I'm all about the flex time. Is there any room to negotiate a four day workweek? Is that a big deal for you? Do you have kids?

I am ALL about flex time too!!!! I have no kids. Im not ready for kids for at least 2 more years. I LOVE having days off during the week. It keeps me sane haha. But i already signed the official offer yeaterday... Is it too late to negotiate it at this point?

If you've signed I would think it's a done deal. I would look for little cracks/openings over the next year as you establish yourself as a great provider in that practice. Little opportunities may present themselves in the form of colleagues that would be up for some sort of 5/4 swap where one week they work the full five days and you work four days and then you switch the next week OR gently putting out feelers that you would love a 10 hr work day so you would have one day off per week.

TRUST me...you are going to be hating life when you have kids and you are in the office 9-5 five days per week. Or at least I would. I'm sure some do it and they love it but it would not be my ideal. If you have no kids right now then use this time to rock that first job, be flexible and put in your time. Then when you do start having children you will have a workplace that values you and your contribution and may be willing to re-negotiate to 3-4 days per week (with appropriate salary reductions of course.)

So true. Im sure i can suck it up haha. Im just feeling grateful for having a decent new grad offer.

I had an offer starting as a new grad at $110K and my instructor said, "That is really low". I thought it was decent.

Specializes in Adult Internal Medicine.

It sounds like a pretty good deal, congrats.

I would check on a few things if you could:

1. Who handles referrals and PAs?

2. How much do other providers have to chart at home?

Specializes in Urology.

Not a bad offer. Texas has a lower COLI than the northeast (where I am from) so that helps a lot. Remember this is a starting point, not an ending one!
