Due to recent changes regarding applications for International nurses to Australia and the combining of the nursing boards to one central nursing board in Australia AHPRA I have started a new thread for people to discuss the new process on working in Australia.
Currently New Zealand is not accepting new applicants from International trained nurses except those that meet the Trans Tasman Mutual Recognition Agreement {TTMR} this will be updated once the New Zealand nursing board reopen their books to International nurses.

hi rajo, yes, the lady mentioned that the 1st intake for 2012 is already full!
that's why im on the waiting list for the 2nd intake. i hope she'd squeeze me in for the jan schedule.
are you aiming for CON too?
hi xekie! I also applied to CON and since you have mentioned that the 1st intake is already full, I specified that I am applying for the 2nd intake. The lady from CON replied that she will let me know which intake i will be allocated when the program dates for next year are already available. :) is CON your primary choice?
@NurseNathalie: I'm glad that they haven't actually misplaced your papers. I hope you get the eligibility letter soon. I hope I get mine soon too!
I sent an email to AHPRA NSW to ask them if I could have my application transferred and assessed at Perth. Here is the reply I got:
"Please be advised that applications are assessed in the State that you will be practising. If are moving to Perth, please provide evidence of this and we can re direct your application to Perth. However, if you are going to be practising in New South Wales your application is required to be assessed at the New South Wales office."
@RN oz1Thank you for your reply. I am actually contemplating on taking the OET instead of IELTS in Australia. My IELTS has expired already (couple of months ago) and although I have used it for my AHPRA application late last year, I know that DIAC will surely require proof of English for a 457 visa. I'm hesitant because as NurseNathalie have said only a few people know about OET and there's not much info about it, not to mention review mats and such. I'm bound for CON this September and I know there's a schedule for the OET on October. Still thinking about it though.. Anyway, thanks again
Those who are going to CON on September (or are currently there for their BP) I have a question: Have you applied for the Police check through the Australian Federal Police? CON's requirement is that aside from our police check here (NBI/police clearance), we're required to submit one from Australian police. How did you go about it? Did you apply form here (sent app form with money order or cheque)? Or will CON allow us sufficient time to apply for a police check once we're already in AU?
I emailed the coordinator of CON yesterday and I asked for a list of all other requirements. I was only thinking of the vaccinations and that I could complete them while waiting for my visa. I was surprised when she replied and said that we still need an Australian police check. That's an additional $43 there tsk tsk tsk...
Yes, you would still need an Australian police check during clinical placement. You would also need it for AHPRA registration and when you apply for jobs.
Are we allowed to wear scrub suits during clinical placements?
In Australia scrub suits are worn when you are assigned in the Theatre and everyone wears the same type so I guess its provided to them. Normally student nurses/new nurses wear black/blue slacks and a white/light-colored top, black shoes. Well, that is as far as I'm aware of. When you do the Assessment of Competence Program you are assessed in the general medical ward and at a beginner's entry so you don't need to bring scrub suits.
Hi guys! Just wanted to share something regarding the whole process I had to go through. I am currently waiting for my work visa to arrive, hopefully it comes in a few weeks time. In NSW, I believe there are a lot of job openings for nurses. If you try to look at job search engines, you will see what I am talking about. I tried applying for every job opening I could find and luckily I was able to get interviews lined up. Take note that not all hospitals are allowed or willing to sponsor foreign nurses, so make sure to clearly state on your cover letter that you need 457 WORK VISA SPONSORSHIP. I think it is quite important for nurses applying in Australia now to have adequate experience, otherwise the hospitals have no reason to sponsor you - as there are many fresh graduates of nursing in Australia. If you have experience in a specialty area, I think there is a higher possibility that you will get a job quickly. Bottom line is, I think it's pretty risky going to Australia with no experience at all.
Hope this helps.
Cheers.
This wait is killing me. It's been 8 weeks since I received my receipt from my processing officer that my documents are complete. Should I resign from my nursing work if I get that eligibility letter? Please pray for me. (lodged my papers at WA)
I'd resign when everything has been finalized. (Bridging Course and Visa). A lot of things can go wrong - and it's very difficult to be unemployed. I resigned the day my 456 visa arrived.

This is so not true from AHPRA We all know that we can apply in any state and do our bps and practice in any other state we wish!
How I wish I hadnt applied there:crying2:
Well, if u really want to transfer ur docs, u can simply tell them that u r doing ur bp in Perth, however, I´m a bit afraid of this transferring docs:uhoh3:.... after all I´ve been through I dont want my docs"travelling" anymore if u know what I mean.
It´s been a week since theyl astcontacted me and I´m already on my nerves:redbeathe
Let´s keep on praying and believing that GOD will provide everything!:heartbeat

Congratulations!
Anyway, what are the chances of a landing a job if you only have a volunteer experience?
hi i'm new here...i just sent my application and other documents to ahpra last monday...
just would like to ask...are first aid, ACLS, and BLS certificates needed before anyone can enroll in a bridging course? do i have to have all the immunizations first before BP?
can anyone enlighten me?...hehehe
Is your bp school CRISCO registered then you cannot apply for student visa. Takes ages as well.
Hi, I tried lodging my 456 visa today, I was told by the person in the embassy that because my school has a CRICOS code, a student visa should then be applied for. He even told me that I can still go on and lodge my 456 visa but he is unsure of the outcome. What do I do?? Intake starts in 8 Sept...
