New grad Filipino nurse wanting to work in Australia/New Zealand Part 2

Published

Due to recent changes regarding applications for International nurses to Australia and the combining of the nursing boards to one central nursing board in Australia AHPRA I have started a new thread for people to discuss the new process on working in Australia.

Currently New Zealand is not accepting new applicants from International trained nurses except those that meet the Trans Tasman Mutual Recognition Agreement {TTMR} this will be updated once the New Zealand nursing board reopen their books to International nurses.

Here is a link for the new points system that will start in July.....they really want experience....and they are giving more points for 1 years and above experience in Australia and only giving 15 points for a Bachelors degree. Starts July 2011. Pass mark is 65.

Cannot claim for study in Australia unless 2 years or more. (DIAC) link as above.

'The new points test is focused on selecting highly skilled people to deliver a more responsive and targeted migration program. It was developed following a review of the current points test, which considered submissions from a variety of experts and the wider Australian community.

The new points test balances the different factors that are considered when determining whether someone will be granted a skilled migration visa. It will deliver the best and brightest skilled migrants by emphasising high level qualifications, better English language levels and extensive skilled work experience.' (DIAC) link as above.

'Points will no longer be awarded on the basis of an applicant’s occupation, but all applicants must still nominate an occupation on the applicable Skilled Occupation List.'

'Applicants who complete a Master program after completing a Bachelors degree are not awarded extra points, as research indicates that the labour market outcomes of previous skilled migrants have not been improved by holding a Masters degree.' (DIAC) link as above. (This is interesting that they picked up on this one)

Filipino nurse with no experience or less than 3 years overseas experience zero points and community language between 25-32 (best points) is 60. Need work sponsor..or partner with a needed profession as well or family to sponsor.

Yes, they also removed some other points that were awarded before. Their English requirement will also change. But their Age requirement has favored abit to those of middle age, I mean the points awarded increased, because according to their study/research, most of the potential employees and serious hard workers (thus was a contributory factor to the economy) came from the middle age group.

The visa fee for this though is expensive, if not the most, among all the visas LoL.

You need to purchase for yourself medical/travel insurance, because as a temporary visitor in Australia, the government wants to be sure that if you get sick or something happens to you, you are covered with insurance ***** (also a forumer here who got her 456 visa already) told me she didnt get any insurance but her show money was "quite" big ^_^. I haven't gotten one yet, but I'm looking into OSHC or Blue Cross or Malayan...haven't really decided on this yet if I will get one.

thanks! this is very informative. how did you come to know of oshc (is that overseas student health cover in australia?), blue cross and malayan?

i tried researching about the oshc's, and this is what i got:

http://www.overseasstudenthealth.com and https://www.oshcworldcare.com.au/Default.aspx#anCalculate:

3 months insurance = AUD105

about http://www.bluecross.com.ph/

90 days = $150 (up to maximum $25k?) ( unsure if AUD or USD)

i don't know if these 2 covers both medical AND travel insurance

i guess if we choose not to include a medical/travel insurance, we just have to add additional $105-150 to our show money. does that makes sense? :uhoh3:

miks103, please inform me if you're going to purchase an insurance. thank you. :)

The points you allocated was just for your own self-evaluation. Its not yet the final one. It will be officially assessed by the case officer and awarded the necessary points as deemed suitable by the officer, meaning your self-evaluation may either decrease or increase.

For community language, to be awarded points you still need to be assessed by DIAC's accredited translator (NAATI something?, not sure if i got the acronym right).

Yes you still need to do an assessment of competence/bridging program as it is a requirement of ANMAC who will assess the nursing profession, thus giving you points for "Nominated Skilled Occupation" of 60 once they assess your suitability to the occupation.

I'm not sure if you are qualified for the 5 points as having met the Australian study requirement because CoN's assessment of competence program is non-award (does not lead to an Australian Award or study requirement).

My spouse and I did this but under subclass 176 (Sponsored) and since we applied last year we follow the old ruling to the skilled migration visa, just this year their policies on skilled migration changed again...

thanks! you really know a lot! the constant changing of rules in oz is a norm :uhoh3:

OSHC, I got the idea from part I of this thread ^_^, there are others too you know that can be purchased online and are Australian based like Medibank, MBF. For OSHC, I'm not looking into the one for students, but the one for overseas visitors (since I think we belong to that category because we aren't on a student visa), but I'm not sure if we could get one like the students.

Malayan is one of our local insurance, I got the idea from Cebu Pacific Airlines...and we can pay in philippine pesos too. They have an insurance called TRAVEL MASTER.

Blue Cross I just googled it and noticed some overseas visitors getting this, and can apply online as well.

But my sister-in-law in Australia suggests I get an australia-based insurance so that claiming will be easier (not that we are hoping something untoward happens ^_^)

Ok, I will let you know... but actually I am not sure If I can attend the April intake already...got abit of problem here... but I already enrolled... I am praying God will show me the right way :)

i hope when i come to oz more opportunities will open. migrating to oz is a very difficult task to accomplish! right now i wanna escape the summer heat in the phil and shiver in the cold autumn of oz! :bluecry1:

you're like a human google you know everything!:yeah:

i hope you can solve your problem so you can make it for the april intake! :gingerbreadman:

I think Murdoch University is $24,000, the $15,000 is only good for 24 units, am I right? the conversion program is 36 units. There is one in Sydney but when I enquired before they said its only for the locals. I don't know of others anymore, sorry.

But this one, even if it does not require AHPRA eligibility beforehand, it will require one later if you wish to undergo registration, you must take note of your IELTS expiration then otherwise you would need to retake the IELTS as it is a requirement of AHPRA.

If you want to undergo the conversion, you may as an option apply for eligibility already so you can submit your valid IELTS and then enroll in the conversion while waiting for your eligibility to come, that is if you strongly believe you will be eligible. :)

You may also try applying to these universities already because if you apply now you will still be qualified anyway for next year's intake. For Murdoch, all you need to do is to submit scanned copies of your documents in their web portal and your done with your application... fast and easy... at least you will have options later to choose. You can always back out on it. Murdoch also allows you to defer for another year. This is what I actually did before, that's why now I have 2 letters of acceptance (College of Nursing and Murdoch Univ.).

you're right about the tuition fee of Murdoch.. so which school are you taking it? CoN is only 8 weeks while Murdoch is 1 year.. hehe.. there's a huge difference in the duration of the program.. :)

Aw, don't say human google haha, I just read alot and surf alot because I want to get things right... applying for Australia is not a joke, alot has been given up and sacrificed... money borrowed here and there ^_^ and still lacking... the emotional and psychological aspect also since we are leaving people we love behind... people around me are expecting so much... and yet I am not confident enough...

Yeah, I hope so too :) Thanks.

I already enrolled in CoN :) But I still deferred in Murdoch for 2012 haha, just want to make sure... because as of now, I am having some problems here that "might" hinder my April intake, but I am really praying hard that I will push through with this. Like I always say in my previous posts, everything happens for a reason... If this pathway is meant for us all obstacles can be hurdled...if not, maybe a better option is yet to come :)

For Murdoch though, since its 1 year, you can opt for the student visa which will allow you to work part-time (20 hours a week and unlimited during holidays). Your spouse and kids can come along too. Spouse can work unlimited during the duration that you are enrolled in your course. So you can atleast sustain your everyday living especially if your spouse comes along to also work. If your spouse finds an employer and is lucky to get a 457 then woots! there you go! ^_^ But the fee and the financial resource (show money) is higher :)

Murdoch also has a village located within the campus which is quite good and comfortable... and affordable :)

it's also my hobby to google "how to do this and that" hehe. where's the lack of confidence coming from? at least you have a relative you can sponsor you :)

I'm a second courser (not that I belittle myself being one, since I took it 3 years also, I am actually proud that after 2 Cesareans I still managed to memorize theories and pass the board ^_^), and you know we were working and taking classes at night and going for clinical duty during weekends, I don't think I had enough exposure compared to the regular nursing students. But one thing I can say is that as a 2nd courser, we were quite fast in understanding, absorbing and applying what was taught to us because our experience in the "real life" is quite vast already (like I myself is a mom of 2 kids so maternal and child nursing was *whistles* haha). I also didn't have yearssss of experience as a nurse, but I did have 15 years experience in a non-nursing job ^_^... and I am overweight and I have hypertension! that is why I am not confident if I can make it through with the "intensity" of the program.
