New grad Filipino nurse wanting to work in Australia/New Zealand

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone, please help me.

I graduated last march 2007 here in the Philippines and I have my license here already.

Because of oversupply of nurses here, it's too difficult to find a job.

That's why I'm looking forward to working in Australia or New Zealand.

However, I'm confused. Esp about Australia.

I already have my bachelors degree here.

When I go there in Aus to work as RN, must I take a diploma in nursing first? can I work while studying?

After obtaining my diploma there, am I already a registered nurse?

Thank you!

Thanks mate, for the quick reply but 3 years it's quite long I think. :idea:Thanks again and good luck to you.:)

Whatever path you choose may it be 2-6 months bp, 1 yr conversion, 1.5-2 yrs preregistration + bp, 3-3.5 yrs undergraduate bsn, a score of 7 in ielts will be required eventually. Good luck on your decision.

bp- cheaper, fast, stressful, intensive, bp slots have long queue, usually requires experience, advisable to young nurses/fresh graduates from reputable schools or nurses with long years of experience or nurses with experience in acute care facilities; fail this one and your aus dreams will end. Perform poorly then you'll have difficulty having an employer that will sponsor you

Conversion- very long and very very expensive, present enough fund and your 457 visa will be easily approved, advisable to rich nurses with no experience or middle aged nurses and 2nd coursers with no experience, excellent foundation for lifelong career as nurse, you can work up to 20 hrs while studying, opportunities will come from leading /reputable hospitals, plenty of offers if you perform well, you'll be considered a local graduate therefore a priority when it comes to hiring, easy to extend you visa, finding an employer that will nominate/sponsor you is a breeze, less stressful, stress will be more from financial situations not from studies, 1 year of study counts for pr, plenty of payback to do once you graduate, you'll earn back every penny that you spent, you are assured that your future employer will sponsor you

---since you mentioned about failing the BP, what are the grounds/reasons for failing the BP? I need some clarification about this. Thanks!

Didn't meet passing score (80% if I'm not mistaken), didn't pass requirements, incompetence, poor attitude, etc etc. The same reasons of failing during your undergraduate degree in phils. Aus is no different. Are you expecting a walk in the park during your bp mate? Think again. Sorry but this is not how the world goes. You'll only get what you deserve

Good to see some reality check here...thanks, terdjay, at least we know what we should expect when we do have the chance to take our BP.

That said, I believe that with perseverance and diligence (and Pinoys have a lot of these, right?), we will be able to achieve our goals...and, in fairness, I do not think anybody here is expecting a walk in the park because certainly even applying for the opportunity to undergo a BP in Oz is, in no way imaginable, a walk in the park. We all worked hard for it and we will continue to work hard for everything we aim for, right?

So, for those taking the BP or even the conversion course, go go go! Good luck and Godspeed.

Cheers!:w00t:

BP/conversion is the key to unlocking a door of endless opportunities. One step at a time and you'll reach your destination eventually. The journey will be confusing, difficult, stressful, dark, and hard so don't forget that whatever you do and what circumstances there may be, you're not alone in this world and you're not living for your self alone. Wait until the time is ripe for there's a place and time for everything under the heavens. Patience is a virtue my friends

to all those who submitted their applications around late December and January, any news yet?

wow this seems gloomy :(

Not really. Once you have your license you're the happiest person on earth. Fear of the unknown- major concern of everyone. Well, the hardest part is to begin.

Guys sorry for asking a noob question but what is an Enrolled Nurse? If i opt for the conversion or a pre-registration course do I fall under the Enrolled Nurse?

and 2nd question is, do any of you know a school in New South Wales that offers the Conversion program?

Thanks in advance to those who reply :)

EN is a diploma holder (2 yrs). RN is a degree holder. EN has their own bp program. RN can undergo bp, conversion, or study 3 yrs again depending on the assessment. In wa, bp is no longer offered so conversion is an only option and no letter from nmbwa is needed. A lot of uni offer offers conversion around aus. Just check them out. But some offers conversion for 1.5 yrs

so it is the same as the BSN undergraduate course here in the PH....at least i have a clear idea on what to expect in AU....unlike here in the PH my chances are 50/50 (transition from volunteer to employed nurse in a tertiary hospital) :crying2:

BTW i expect a walk in the dessert during my BP or conversion .....but in the end i will see an oasis in the dessert (success!) :yeah:

thanks terdjay for the reply :) So the conversion is not affected in anyway with the New Registration this July?

I called up College of Nursing (NSW) this morning and sad to say they indeed already canceled the July and September Intakes of the BP Program and even those pre-registration courses is put to a halt first... they said they will have to wait for the Nursing Board to advice them on what programs for nurses to offer after the New Registration is effected. I'm still trying to contact the NMB-NSW but I still cannot get through. I really want to find out if there are schools in NSW (since my sister is a PR there) who offers the Conversion Program at least and get an assurance from the board that its okay to pursue with the conversion.

I also called up a University in WA who offers the Conversion Program and they said that it's being offered right now and even also next year, they also said that it's not going to be affected by the unification of the registration boards. But I'm still worried if its still okay to apply for the conversion now...

As for QNC, I received an email from them saying that they do not have any Competence Program anymore and that all applications will re-open after July.
