New Career....Newly Pregnant?

Nursing Students CNA/MA

Published

Hello Everyone! I recently got hired on at a local hospital as a PCA. Which as I was told is basically a CNA w/o the certification. I was way excited about starting my new career, and hoping to attend nursing school this fall. I'm not 100% sure yet, but I believe I may be pregnant. Does anyone out there have any advice for me? When should I tell my employer? Can they fire me? Thanks Guys and Gals!:heartbeat

The hospital can't fire you based on your pregnancy. If they did, they would be in deep poop.

Congratulations on your new job and your potential pregnancy.

Congrats! I would wait out your probation period( 90 days). If you tell before, they could give any reason to terminate and you would have no say in it.Its not right but its how it works. Also, FMLA is not available until you have been employed 1 year. You will still get to take leave just not as much and not paid.Good luck!:redbeathe

I have worked with people who are pregnant and you may be placed on some lifting restrictions especially as you get closer to your due date. Also stay away from MRSA and C-Diff rooms if possible. Once your coworkers know you are expecting, they may take it upon themselves to "protect you" ie- taking the heavy patients themselves, those on contact precautions etc. I would wait for definite comfirmation from your OB-Gyn and wait out your 90 days before telling your bosses. Good luck to you

so....are you pregnant? i am excited to hear. i work with several pregnant women. i do take it upon myslef to take care of the pts in iso. for them and do the heavy lifting and things like that. i hope that when i have children they do that for me. working in the medical field there are lots of women of childbearing age working these days so pregnancy is an everyday thing at our hospital. the bosses don't really say much when 75% of the women that work in our unit are childbearing age. they expect women to get pregnant. good luck and let us know what you find out.
