Hello!
I just purchased this book after reading the review in the NYTimes.
I have read 80 pages so I won't give my opinion yet but wanted to know
if anyone else read this, are reading the book or have read any of her other books?
Thanks,
"Nursing Against All Odds" Suzanne Gordon

the complete title of this book is:
nursing against the odds: how health care cost cutting, media stereotypes, and medical hubris undermine nurses and patient care
sounds like a very interesting read.

I've read this author before and have never been disappointed.

I have this book and I'm about 1/2 way through it. I also read a book she co-authored "From Silence to Voice" which I loved. She is a national healthcare reporter from Canada and a strong advocate for nurses. I think she has a lot of great ideas for making the value of nursing care better known.

I'm about 3/4 of the way through it. It's very interesting and well-written.
Although I'd lose my job if anyone pulled some of the stunts she's described with me. I'll be hanged if any doctor is going to lay one hand on me.

I've read the book. Love it. I think she is dead on. For a non nurse she really gets it! Maybe that is good- she also sees things that us nurses may be too close to the issues to see and understand clearly. Suzanne Gordon is my hero! Right now I'm organizing a book discussion on her book, (at a university labor center I take classes at), we will hold it in August and see what comes out of the discussion. After reading her latest I also read From Silence to Voice. I think her ideas are sound, and if we can get over ourselves and stop fighting each other instead of the real enemies, I think nursing can make big strides in taking back and constructively using the power that actually belonged to us all along.

Sandy,
It's just what the "nurse ordered."
I love it and can't keep my nose out ot it though I am only 1/3 through it which is mainly her introduction (great "epiphany" story where she "nurses" a friend from same day surgery to home) and the history of the dynamics between nurses and docs (I hate to say it but I was pretty surprised reading some of the female docs take on us). Gordon does an impeccable job with detail and elaborating both sides of the coin. I highly recommend it to everyone from nursing/medical students to retired nurses and everyone in between I do believe it could be a prequisite read for anyone going into the medical field. Enjoy and I hope we can all continue a discussion in this thread and learn from it for our future.
Thanks for the responses.

It mostly talks about what all nurses experience and or discuss-the portrayal of nurses, the poor recognition that nurses receive, the idea that nurses shouldn't get paid much because we are all "angels of mercy" and shouldn't care about making a decent living, how screwed up the medical system is, etc etc. It is definately very pro-nurse, and tries to help, but is also kind of dismal to read
