Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello everyone,

I am about to start a 2 year RN program this Fall and then on to my BSN. I was wondering if anyone had any pointers on what I could do or study up on this Summer to help prep me for the program. I am pretty nervous and would like to be as prepared as possible! :)

Thank you for your time!

Sarah

Relax while you can. You will learn what you need to know!

If anything, pick up a simple medical terminology book to browse through in your spare time.

Learn to speed read, or masterread. It definitely helps when in a pinch. Also, would recommend a study skills course.

Unless it all came easily to you, review your A&P. I am constantly saying the bones/muscles/insertions/origins on my CNA patients. The ones who can, laugh!!!

GIrlfriend!!! I just finished my RN program, and I am going to tell you what I wish someone would have told me.....

1.) learn the groups pf drugs and their main effects on the major systems ex: Betablockers end in "lol" like Metoprolol and slow down the heart rate and drop BP (this will help you a lot)

2.) learn about NCLEX style questions such as the words to narrow in making it the right or wrong selections.

3.) Review you conversions and drug calculations because this will be used every week, in every semester.

4.) Start learning pediatric illnesses early!!! There is too many!

5.) Get your fundamentals book and start learning therapeutic communication, teaching styles, learning styles, ECT. You will use this and its a lot to learn!

6.) Skills... watch videos on youtube

and that should do it before you start!!! Goodluck we are here for you!

Specializes in Maternal Child, Home Health, Med/Surg.

Congratulations! I have no tips for you, but I wanted to wish you congrats! :D And good luck!

Our program advised us not to work during the program if we could help it. I am planning on volunteering at the hospital that I hope to eventually be hired at! And finally my college posted the books we need for first semester so I went ahead and got my Fundamentals of Nursing textbook so I could start reading it. We haven't even had orientation so I have no idea what to expect. :nailbiting:
