NELRP 2013 - Who else applied?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

This is my first year applying for the NELRP but I have known about it for about 3 years, I just recently got a job at a facility they recognize. I was wondering if anyone here has applied before and is the process really as long as I have been reading on past threads? Oh, and do they tell you why you don't get it if you get denied? I'm just a little nervous because I need this help greatly! :nailbiting:

Thanks for sharing that. I appreciate the encouragement! You definitely deserve it at 200%.

Hey I just wanted to pass on some information I received from BCRS/Nurse Corps today regarding the loan repayment program. The guy I talked to was very helpful. He said that they are using rolling award periods so that everyone is not entering contracts at the same time. He said that this award period lasts until October 31st and that after that they will be sending out denial emails. He said that nobody should be calling to get banking information and that it is all done via email. He said that if your status is "under review" they have not attempted to contact you yet and you have not been denied. If it states "submitted" there is some reason why it was immediately denied and if it says "selected" you have been contacted or will be contacted soon. He also said that the award is not guaranteed even after you give your banking information, the application is moving into "final review" after that you receive your contract.

Thank you for sharing!

Anyone gotten a rejection yet?

Has Anyone received their 1st payment yet? I was just trying to figure out how to apply it to my student loans. I will still have 60K left in loans at the end of 3 years, but I have a huge 40K Private Loan that will never be forgiven. I am hoping that the 10 Year public loan forgiveness will still be there in 10 years!! So I am making my payments assuming that will still be happening. So my plan is to make the minimum payment for now on my Federal Loans, and most of my payment to my Private loans, and then when the private loan is paid off in about 15 months the entire amount will go to my federal loan. I have calculated it and its close but by doing it this way my Federal Loan will be paid up for the next 10 years and they remaining will be forgiven. Does that make any sense? My federal loan is consolidated to I just make 1 giant $400-$500 dollar payment to the federal, and $250 to the private. I am hoping its ok for me to be ahead on my payments for my federal loans but I dont know how they work.

Praying lots for other people to get the awards, there is still time from what I have read in the past.

@micahbgibbs - congrats on receiving the award! To me, your plan seems solid. I received my second payment on the 21st and I have a similar strategy. The only difference is that I am focusing on paying the higher interest rate loans first, while paying the minimum on the others. Most of my loans are private.

I'm hoping this will give me more bang for the buck over the life of the program.

To those still waiting on decisions: sending many prayers your way!

My status still says 'under review'.

I was reading up on the Public Loan Forgiveness Program, my plan was to prepay my federal up for 10 years and the other remaining will be forgiven. But it says you cant prepay your monthly payments, unless you call and tell them how to pay your loans that way. I really am stressed that it will get messed up.

Does anyone else have the same issue or plan with their payments? My main issue will be my federal loans and if I will be able to take advantage of the public loan forginess program after 10 years. Its a little more complicated!!

My status is still under review

Wonder what effect potential government shut down will have?

As you are aware, the Federal Government Fiscal Year 2013 ends on September 30, 2013 and an Appropriation Act for Fiscal Year 2014 has not yet been passed. In the event that a continuing resolution or a Fiscal Year 2014 budget is not passed, and a lapse of funding occurs, the NURSE Corps Loan Repayment Program will be affected by the government shutdown. Staff that administer the NURSE Corps Loan Repayment Program will not be available to support these programs. As a result, they will be unable to respond to requests or inquiries.

The NURSE Corps Loan Repayment Program will return to normal program operation when the Department has the authority and funding to do so.

We will continue to keep you informed as more information becomes available.

Does this mean they have halted choosing applicants for this cycle or is it talking about the possibility of not having the program in 2014?
