NELRP is there a thread?

Published

Is there already a thread for RNs waiting to hear about awards from the Nursing Education Loan Repayment Program?

When I search, I can only find previous year's threads.

I found this HRSA press release listing last year's NELRP awards by state. I thought I'd share it so everyone can see the distribution. I found it interesting, yet a little discouraging. Unfortunately, I don't live in one of the states with a high number of awards.http://www.hrsa.gov/about/news/pressreleases/111011nursingworkforce.html

Thanks for posting, I'm with you, a little discouraged. But remember, we aren't giving up just yet:)

I have just been lurking every now and again because I don't have much hope of getting the loan repayment. Somehow our HPSA score went from 9 to 0 since I applied, although I work in close to the poorest and the most unhealthy county in the state. I am an APRN, so I guess I have that going for me. I haven't received any letter or email or anything, but I did have a credit check from CBC/DHHS/BPHC which I guess from previous year's posts is a HRSA check. My debt to income is also not as impressive as most others at about 95% (although it feels pretty oppressive to me). I really still don't have my hopes up at all. I did not read the APRN thing the same way as others, I just read it as up to 50% of funds may be allocated for APRNs, I still think they will probably work all the way through tier 1 APRNs and RNs before moving to tier 2 APRNs, does anyone else have information to the contrary? This wait is quite difficult, and I find myself more stressed about it after reading about everybody else's stress. Good luck to all, keep us posted!

Hi Guys,

I would like to have this clear, if you don't have a good credit score, you won't be eligible?????????

I'm not sure, I'm sure it has to be decent anyway and no federal defaults for sure but I don't know the actual rule!!!

Thanks for posting, I'm with you, a little discouraged. But remember, we aren't giving up just yet:)

Well, I'm also in a state with a lower number but I gotta keep my hopes up. Today I talked to someone in charge of assigning the HPSA scores and unfortunately I (my clinic) does not have a score yet.....he said I will have one maybe July 17th....it was suppose to be ready in December.....so, I really don't know where that puts me in the tier. It is a rural health clinic and qualifies but no official score......but if I don't get it, i'll apply again next year....I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Specializes in Telemetry, Stepdown, Pediatrics.

So I spoke with a HRSA rep yesterday and he told me that just because your application still says 'submitted' doesn't mean you won't get funding, it just means they haven't even gotten to your application yet but that they will and not to be too discouraged. He also said that they look at more than just what tier you fall under, like whether your employer has good things to say about you, debt/income ratio, etc. We all need to keep hoping!!

Anything is possible!!! I read it to say that (and I could be wrong) that 50% of the funds will go to APRN's first starting with tier 1 down and the reason I say that is because I think that educators had funding preference last year? I'm an NP also but I may be tier 3, if my score doesn't get assigned and I'm just praying......I was just in a mind-loop today because I don't have an assigned number and am sure if I did that I would be in a higher tier....I treat a huge percentage of Medicare and Medicaid and no one else in the area will accept them, they drive 20-50 miles......and I have a large nursing home population....and in saying all of that I love what I do and the patients that I take care of and I wouldn't have it any other way......stay positive because I am....everything will work out as it should and we can always apply again next year........Remember, I think it was the ANCC said it was the year for NP's with the new funding preference! And I hope it's the year for everyone because the main thing is we are all "nurses" and we are what we are because we want to help people and make their lives a little better and easier. We may not get rewarded financially but we get rewarded in other ways every day! You can't put a price on a smile!!!!

Oh, wow!!! I just read this....that will be marvelous if it is true!!!!!

Posts on last year's thread from an HRSA employee said that your credit SCORE has no effect on your chances. (I believe he also blatantly said it's none of their business.) He said that they look at your credit REPORT to make sure you haven't defaulted on federal debt. Basically, any of us could have the worst credit score ever heard of, as long as our debt is in good standing.

I also don't know if they contact our employer for anything other than need-to-know facts about our employment. It seems odd that they would ask for anything like a professional reference. I know my facility is way too big for my nurse manager to know me well enough to be able to give that kind of info, let alone someone in HR. And it definitely wasn't on the list of qualifying criteria! ;)

Still hoping and wishing! Any of us could be the lucky few!

I love your positive outlook:)

Not only would HR not know anything about me, they won't even respond to anything. My nurse manager had to fill out the papers because the HR department would not even answer my email or return my calls for assistance with it and of course they are always unavailable when I tried to go to their office. Unfortunately, I don't believe they are accountable to anyone therefore they do not care.
