NELRP is there a thread?

Is there already a thread for RNs waiting to hear about awards from the Nursing Education Loan Repayment Program?

When I search, I can only find previous year's threads.

After following this for months and months, we finally got the rejection for my wife's application. I went to log on to the HRSA site and was switched from under review to non selected for the award. Oh well...time to quit stressing and start focusing on something else. Looks like I get to break the news to her at dinner before she starts her 4 straight night shifts. Fun, fun...

I'm so sorry!

I also received the rejection letter, after logging in every day! It's okay guys... We will definitely get it next year! The waiting game is torture!! There should be a better, quicker process, 6 months is entirely too long!

I'm sorry to hear that you didn't receive it this year. Did they tell you why? Since you know what you will need, be ready the first day the application open!!!

Reapply in 2013. Call your bank or loan servicing company and apply for forebearance or ask for advice. There is income based payments or consolidation as options too. If you consolidate w direct loans after ten years they might forgive your loans. I know you are upset but there are solutions just ask. You applied with over 10,000 people! Apply again next year as well.

I called at the beginning of the year & was told there was nothing they could do because it is a private loan & I had already selected the gradual repayment plan (pay x amount for 2 years & then payments doubled for the next 25 yrs/until I pay it off). I asked about forbearance or any other option because I simply can't afford it, and she said there was nothing to be done; all she could recommend was paying as much as I can then. Also can't consolidate because it's a private loan.

Also, HRSA replied to my inquiry about reason my application was denied & they said they don't get told reason why. Is there a different option to pursue this? someone would could tell me why? I don't want to repeat a mistake next year if this is the reason I didn't get it.

and sign up for one of the web conferences. This site has a lot of information regarding the public loan forgiveness program. If I'm not mistaken, you will be able to consolidate your private loans into the program but then that would disqualify you for the HRSA student loan assistance as they do not pay for private loans. Perhaps you could just consolidate your qualifying loans, ask for a deferment and just pay on the private loan.

I'm still a little confused myself about the IBR but I understand it helps you get lower payments that you can actually afford once you consolidate.

I, too am disappointed about not getting the grant for my loans. The last time I looked into the state program, the nhsc, it appeared as though you had to be 3 months within hire date to qualify, any body else know anything about these programs.

Check with your state department, In FL it doesn't matter about the hire date, you have to commit for a year and you can get forgiveness up to four years. You have to resubmit each year. But it does matter where you work because not all public facilities qualify.

I got my denial letter as well...there must be something they aren't telling us about who gets selected because I have more debt than most who did get awarded

Are you saying private loans are not included in nelrp? Our are you talking about something different?

Hello silvermoondust45,

So that means no private loans will be forgiven? I too received a rejection email last night. If this is true, I have a good idea why I was not eligible this year for the loan repayment program. I feel like they did not make this clear. Is this link that you gave applicable to the NERLP program as well?

Also, should I consolidate my federal loans? I have 2 batches of federal loans that will be coming into repayment soon.

Thanks,

Lisa

I think that may have been a typo. I have plenty of private loans that were all included in my award. Silvermoondust, could you clarify that statement? I'm a little confused as well.

I was also under the impression that private loans that were taken out & directly distributed to my college for my BSN are eligible for the NELRP; if not, I have my answer as to why I didn't receive an award. I'm going to e-mail them to be certain or else I'm wastin gmy time filling this out next year. Also, if they aren't eligible, is anyone aware of any forgiveness program where private loans are eligible?

and not that my opinion matters, but why would private loans not be eligible? I could not have gone to nursing school without one, because I simply was not awarded enough federal loans (although I have a few of those too).
