Is there already a thread for RNs waiting to hear about awards from the Nursing Education Loan Repayment Program?
When I search, I can only find previous year's threads.
I have spent so much time reading about the 10 year public service loan forgiveness program, and call me dumb because I just don't understand it!! I have three different loan companies, all loans are Federal, non-commercial/private. Do any of the past years of work and public service count or am I suppose to put them all together first? I am confused to what the direct loan consolidation thing is. I did send an email to HRSA and they said we are allowed to consolidate as long as it is the only loans involved in this program (which they are).
To all who are still waiting to hear, we are all praying and crossing our fingers for you! They are behind in getting the emails out because they had so many applications this year, but don't give up yet!!!

My husband and I have looked at this quite a bit. This is how we understand it at this point and unfortunately it wont work for us, but maybe some of you? The 10 years starts when you do the direct loan consolidation. You have to be working fulltime for 10 years. For us, most of our loans are set to a ten year plan anyway, so by the time we reach that we would have to have paid them. Pretty much the only way to find this program useful is if you are in IBR (icome based repayment) or have loans that stretch out over longer periods of time than 10 years. Look at the options to strech out loans carefully because some of then leave you not eligable for the public service forgiveness. We do have loans in IBR but over time we plan to make more money, hopefully! And so we would end up having to pay the ones that are in IBR anyway, if that makes sense. Just like while im recevcing the NELRP money my IBR loans come into repayment because its counted as income. So really it is not as helpful as I was hoping but I bet there are some that it will be helpful for. Good luck.
