NELRP is there a thread?

Published

Is there already a thread for RNs waiting to hear about awards from the Nursing Education Loan Repayment Program?

When I search, I can only find previous year's threads.

I have a couple of questions please,

1. How do I figure out which loan to pay on first or do I pay a portion to each? I have 3 different loan companies.

2. Does anyone know if we can consolidate while we are a participant in this program?

3. I thought we had to submit a job verification immediately but I don't see one on my portal, am I right about this?

4. Can this two years count toward the 10 year public service loan forgiveness?

Thank you for your help;)

To those still waiting, praying for you all, there is still time!!

1. I don't know the answer to number one. I read somewhere in last year's blog that they don't care how you pay, as long as all of the payment is going towards approved loans.

2. I believe that on the webinar information session they said you can consolidate after getting in the program. But I would clarify with then if you are consolidating any loans not covered by the program.

3. Yes, this can count toward the ten years, as long as your loans are eligible. I believe they have to be federal direct loans and on certain repayment plan like either Income based or standrd. But I don't know all the details. Mine are Federal direct loans and I'm in the income based repayment plan, and am eligible for forgiveness. So you may need to consolidate to get them into an eligible status.

Yes u can consolidate and it can count towards 10 year forgiveness but when I called to get info it would make my payments a lot higher cause they were income based. I then spoke with Sallie Mae and they said that my loans are scheduled to be paid off in 10 years anyway with the monthly payment that I'm currently on. I'm going to pay highest interest rate 1st. Hope this info helps

Thank you very much! I hadn't even thought about calling the loan company but I will now!

1. You can pay as little or as much as you want to any eligible loans, as long as all of the dispersements are put towards those loans at the end of the two years. I'm personally going to make payments on the highest interest loans first, while still paying a small amount out-of-pocket for lower interest loans, so that I can knock out those private loans in 2 years.

2. Once you're a participant you can consolidate any time. I called HRSA yesterday to ask that same question and I'm already in the process of consolidating with a much better interest rate!

3. I think the employment verification starts after the first 6 months of payments. I assume they check our employment before they make the initial awards.

4. I second what janisleigh said. Unfortunately I only have 2 direct loans and the rest (10+) aren't eligible until I consolidate them. I've made 2 years of payments, so I'm hoping I can leave the 2 direct loans out of the consolidation.

I'm glad that we can finally start to talk about the program as participants, but I'm still hopeful for those who have yet to get the good news!

Thank you so much, I am grateful for the information! I have couple of more questions for you if you don't mind!

1. Are you consolidating for the public service loan forgiveness? I have spent quite a bit of time this morning trying to figure it out.

2. Do we have to notify HRSA before consolidating or do we just do it.

I too am very grateful that we can talk as participants and I've got my fingers crossed for those who are still waiting!

I'm so happy for you!!!

Thank you so much! I couldn't have made it through the stress without everyone on this thread!

Still praying for everyone. Can't hardly wait to get my final email and see my PAW.
