NEGLECT

Published

Neglect: I was educated as a nurse, diploma only as my education was interrupted by family. Rotated all through the hospital in late 1980's. Hard worker, didn't take any shortcuts. Learned a lot about many termed diseases over the 8 years as a clinical RN. Worked in Cardiovascualar Surgical ICU for 2 years before I left to start a family. Fast forward 6 years, married an MD, had 5 pregnancies in 5 yrs with 4 csections and 4 full term births. Suffered from postpartum depression and almost died by the age of 40, from burnout. I also was a caregiver for both parents with cancer for 18yrs while being a stay at home nurse. It took 50yrs for me to figure out after seeing 100's of MD's that nursing did not educate me on mineral and nutritional deficiciencies and food toxicity. I have recovered twice from acute pancreatitis, even though I was a very light drinker. My weakness sweets. My 4 children all with food allergies and intolerances and some delays. I loved my experience and education as a nurse, but have to overcome that I was not educated in understanding the functional body, only the ill consequences of poor habits. To all who are practicing nursing I give you kudos. Not sure if I'll reconnect with a license at this time. Stay safe and find good things to carry you through the day. Thank you for your service.

To whom does the term "neglect" apply?  I'm taking away that you have neglected your own needs going through all those pregnancies and suffering post partem depression.  I guess that I am grateful to have had that boring nutritional class (3 credits) back in the day!  It put me to sleep but, now that you have posted this, I must give it credit for leaving me with a life-long interest in nutrition as the foundation for health - physical as well as emotional.  Take care.

Subee, I've wanted to say that since this was posted. You and I probably took the same nutrition class (I have been practicing nursing since 1978). It was not of course the foundation of my nursing career in CVICU/Open heart, but it was not intended to be. We as individuals must take what we did learn and make our own nutritional and lifestyle choices, wise or not.

Yes.  Working in CVICU, you certainly see the results of bad nutrition.  I remember seeing a patient scheduled for open heart the next day eating a large size bag of barbeque potato chips that her daughter brought in for her.

suebee - a lifetime of poor choices is not going to be changed 'overnight'. That pt's 'omission' of that snack wouldn't make one iota of difference for her upcoming surgery. Rather, it was most prob a coping mechanism for her pre-op stress level. And your level of disdain prob comes NOWHERE even near to her own level of regret.

Do you think that after over 40 years of nursing I don't know that?  Wouldn't it be better if we could do a better job of educating people about the value of good food and better coping mechanisms - starting in elementary school?

I made no judgements about the woman's character.  It's just that we live in a country in which very powerful forces are in control of the food chain corrupting what we have available to us to put in our mouths - depending on your income and where you live, crap food is a lot more available than nutritious food.

But it's not just food, it's everything! Economy, resources, education, etc. I'm a stress eater and there are SEVERAL stressors in my life and many others' lives. Not to mention, many of the foods we eat, our ancestors ate, and had less ill effects. This leads me to my next point, it's the crap they're putting in our food. If Monsanto was found guilty of cancer-causing agents in weed killer, why weren't they disbanded? Those same cancerous agents are being used on our food supply. Why isn't FDA doing anything about it? We're being failed as a society on multiple levels. Just my $0.02.

And I can't like it enough.  Sometimes I think of grocery stores as cancer, obesity and depression machines.
