Is anyone else experiencing this? We are having a problem with negativity in our office. :smiley_ab :argue: It seems that if one nurse says something negative, then they all jump on the bandwagon. It seems that it is all just one big gripe session. I think that there are very few of us that avoid it altogether. I believe that negativity breeds negativity and that attitudes are catching (good or bad). Does anyone have any idea what would be helpful in pulling our group together? Or is it a lost cause of negative b**chy nurses? Is it working with a 99% female staff? To be honest I am SICK OF LISTENING TO PEOPLE WHINE!!!! :angryfire
For the love of Mike, could we please dispense with the "blame it on women/PMS," etc? It's a degrading comment to women and has absolutely no scientific research to back it up.
Did the OP ever consider that morale might be low because of the particular specialty she works in? Has the hospice agency had a recent cluster of pt. deaths/difficult cases, etc.? Perhaps some support meetings are needed. What steps has the OP taken to make the environment more positive or find out why there's an increase in negativity?
Hockeytown, I agree that there is a way of complaining that is humorous. The only problem with that is the people who gossip, complain and make fun of people in that humorous, catty way. Yes, it can be hysterical to listen to some people, but then you realize they are doing it at the expense of another human being, and that is not funny.
If its complaining about the weather or such, once in awhile, in a humorous way, fine. Just not that catty bi*ching, that can also be funny, about people. KWIM?

Where did I say anything about complaining about someone else? Or gossiping, or being catty? I am not in high school. I enjoy people who don't take themselves too seriously.

About the only person I make fun of is myself, and that usually gets plenty of laughs.
Of course, there was the case of the woman who put mirrors in her room so she could see her refridgerator (she weighs 475 pounds and is confined to her bedroom) because she was certain one of her nurses stole $32 worth of sticky buns...heaven forbid. Like, maybe at 475 pounds she should be thankful someone removed a few sticky buns out of her reach...
you've got to have an outlet. you just dont' have to be nasty and mean about it.
that is the kind of humor that goes around our workplace. Pretty harmless, if you ask me.
Just this April/May, our teachers (all nurses) were having heat between them. It was like a previous faculty member vs. the new faculty. Because of this fight, the new faculty had intentions of resigning. The result, that previous faculty member resigned. One of the previous faculty members (not a nurse) was so disappointed with our teachers having the fact that they're all nurses, yet they fight each other.
Speaking of negativity, one of our new teachers has a very strong personality and is one of them annoying "know-it-alls". Yes, she has experience but no need to make students feel inferior, DUH :angryfire
Our secretary just completed our office newletter with the saying : "Attitudes are Contagious. Is Yours Worth Catching?". When I read it I told her that I was glad that I wasn't the only one who felt the negativity had gone too far. We had a group of nurses sitting in our conference room the other day. One said "I don't know about you guys, but if they ask me to take another patient in _______ area I'm telling them to take the patient theirselves". Of course, next thing your know they are all saying "me too" "yeah, I agree" "Nobody cares"..........I just looked at them and said "I don't know about your guys, but if I needed help in my area I would expect those nurses to help me, so why wouldn't I help them" "If you guys won't help those other nurses, I'll do it, but don't expect them to be willing to help you when YOU need it".........Of course, it got a little quiet and some backtracked and said that they would help. It's amazing how when the table is turned, attitudes change! What's amazing is, those nurses including me, just got a BIG FAT RAISE because the director felt they were underpaid and overworked! I thought "I'm thankful to have a job where the management CARES" I'll work harder for someone who is an employee oriented manager and feel it is unfair to the manager to continue to be negative after her hard work getting all of us such a big raise. Jeeeeeeeeeeeeezzzzzze What a bunch of Bi((hes!!!!
