Lately I’ve been thinking about applying to nursing school but my grades are horrible. GPA at community college for my AA is 2.7 and GPA at university for my BS is 2.5. I calculated my science GPA and believe it’s 3.2. I graduated 10 years ago. Returning to school 2 years shy of 40.
I am feeling discourage after reading this forum that maybe I will not get into nursing school. I am in the process of applying to 2: one for ADN and one for ABSN. Honestly I am counting big time to do well on my TEAS for even a small chance of acceptance.
Anyone with grades like mine and was accepted? I’m so embarrassed. I feel like such a failure. Lately I’ve been going through something and my heart is not at peace because for the rest of my life I will probably mount to nothing. Any words of encouragement would greatly help. Thanks

Hey ?
I think the thing that matters the most is your drive , if you know that you want to become , then go for it! It's definitely a tough road , when I decided on becoming one , my plans were altered and some of my grades weren't the best in terms of competition but you still have to hold on. The thing is if you want something very much go for it and don't let anyone stomp on your dreams. I will be honest though I would probably retake some classes ( see if your school will let you retake a class and replace it with the highest grade ? ) I did have a friend whom was accepted with a 2.75 into nursing school but their entrance score was very high (she was waitlisted though). I don't know you but I know that you can do it.
And never say you don't amount to anything , it's not fair to you and if you keep thinking like that it will manifest. Also too I see you mentioned age , I feel that in most cases age is an insecurity , in my school I've seen people as old as 80 get degrees (One of my closest friends is a 50 year old woman , whom came here from a foreign country , got a diploma and is working towards her associates)! Nothing is impossible , just keep reaching and don't give up. When you feel down , get back up and dust yourself off and keep going.
❤️❤️❤️ I believe in you

I would recommend looking at all the schools in your area THAT YOU CAN AFFORD and making a list focused on admission requirements.
Some schools (like mine) look only at your science GPA. You can re-take sciences as a refresher and to boost the GPA.
Are you in California? It is tough to get into programs there, not so tough other places. You know what realtors say- location, location, location!
Look at LPN programs- because once you have that credential, getting into a bridge program can be far easier than competing against a bunch of 18yo for a spot in other more competitive programs. (I started as an LPN)
Beware of for-profits. They tend to have lower admission standards, but they also have lower NCLEX pass rates and higher attrition rates.
And if it takes you a year or two to do the above- so what? Honestly, so what? I am the Director of a BSN program and just graduated a 62 year old. He is in good health and was hired right away at his first choice employer. NO ONE in nursing admission cares about your age. It is only YOU who has age as some imaginary barrier.
I hope this is helpful.

Thank you so very much for this. I appreciate your well-thought response. I spent the night reading some of the articles you've posted and it helped me find the motivation to keep going, even when I can't even find the strength to do so.

I truly appreciate your response. I am currently applying to an ADN & ABSN program. My TEAS is set for June 30th. If I don't get in, I will retake my science courses to apply for LVN or ADN program Fall of 2022. I am in TX.
I will continue to keep pushing forward. I will continue to do so in little steps. I will accomplish my goal. Thank you for this.
Do you know how long it will take LVN to BSN? I saw that it was 1 year for LVN then 2 years bridge from LVN to BSN. I am willing to invest as much time as possible to reach my RN dream. Sometimes I just need a reminder that I can and I will.

I’m not sure any of your old courses will apply, especially the science ones. Many schools won’t take a course for credit if it’s more than 5 yrs old. That’s the bad news.
The good news is that you can start fresh and do better. Don’t worry about your age- take as long as you like to do a few at a time, get any help you need early on (not when you’re facing midterms or finals), and then apply. Don’t waste your time with LVN. Take the 3-4 years for your BSN. I know how daunting that sounds but you will be in a much better place to choose your work setting, the importance of which is HUUUUUGE. And those years will go by anyway.

Thank you for this! I will retake my BIOL & PSYC courses starting this FALL. I received mostly A's & B's, but will aim for A's once I am back in class.
When I look at nursing schools requirements, there's an accumulative GPA (mainly 3.0), but mine is very low. Retaking those classes in my field of nutrition is impossible due to time and cost. I'm confused on how accumulative GPA is calculated for pre-nursing. And what can I do to bring up my accumulative GPA?
Your GPA will only count the classes they accept in transfer, including the ones you’ll be taking for admission now. You can forget all the rest of them. So if you got a 4.0 in intermediate basket weaving in 2008, it won’t count, but your 3.87 in Chemistry next semester will. Does that help?

This!
This helps me understand a little better regarding accumulative GPA. So when the school requires 55 SCH, there's a list of all classes that's required & I just have to make sure my GPA for those class meets their requirement?
This is so helpful! Thank you!!
Don’t know what 55 SCH is. Any grades for the classes you take (past classes only count if current by the schools criteria for how old they are) as prerequisites would be part of calculating your cumulative GPA. All your ancient nutrition cases won’t be included in that calculation if they won’t accept them in transfer.

your not alone I had a 2.7 cumulative GPA, a 2.7 science GPA, and a low TEAS score but guess what? I am currently enrolled in a nursing program! it may take a while because it is competitive but it will happen eventually just hang in there.

This gives me so much hope! CONGRATULATIONS!! It literally brought tears to my eyes. I don't see this enough. When I see others with 3.5+ GPA with 80+ TEAS, it makes me rethink my nursing choice.
May I ask if your school has a point system, GPA & TEAS, and/or lottery system? The schools are here extremely competitive. My plans for the next year to retake my science courses and I have been cramming for my TEAS. A lot of info are not syncing, but I will continue to study and pass it.
