Does anyone have experience in volunteering. How do i get a volunteer job as a nurse? I searched online and nothing came up. Am I supposed to go from office to office and just ask? I've had two short lived nurse jobs and not a lot of experience. I have a little baby and need to establish a career so I can take care of him. Please, any advise is apretiated.

You would need to go to through the volunteer department at the facility in which you want to volunteer at, or at least that is the way we do it at my hospital,

Hello,
I have volunteered with Remote Area Medical in the past. They hold massive free clinics in US and have a few international expeditions. I had an incredible experience doing triage in their Los Angeles free clinic last year. Thousands of people in such poor health and destitution that I wanted to believe was not possible in America. Their website is ramusa.org.
I also got to meet with a few administrative nurses and former/current nursing professors during the clinics. I did not intend on volunteering for RAM to get a job, but I totally see how well it could work out as a networking tool.
You could also go to the HR or volunteer departments specific facilities you are interested in to see what volunteer positions they have. You may not be able to volunteer as a nurse, but you could certainly volunteer in some capacity and get face time with your future colleagues and managers. Even if you do not get a job immediately, you can still put something on your resume or impress someone enough to get a reference or letter of recommendation.
Good luck!

Same advice as the other two posters. Very easy process but I wonder why you want to volunteer and not work as a nurse. You won't gain any skills during volunteering (I know from personal experience). Try for a paid position, it will help with both experience and taking care of your child.
Good luck :)

Most volunteer positions do not qualify as nursing experience. Those that are (doctors without borders, etc.) require previous nursing experience (such as critical care or ED).
Most offices will not accept volunteer nurses due to liability issues.
Hospitals don't have volunteer positions for nurses but a free clinic is a good idea. And I want to volunteer as a nurse b/c i want to have continuity in my resume just in case i want to go back to it.

Does your town have a free clinic? Mine does and they are always desperate for licensed help.
Yes Hospitals do I Serve on the Governing Body for volunteer services at a Hospital, and its actually the norm to have volunteer nurses. We dont post open slots for Volunteer nurses, but we do accept them on a case by case.
Thanks. Any suggestions on how I go about getting it b/c volunteer dept.'s in hospitals around here are just a buch of nice old ladies.
You would to contact the director of volunteer services. It will be his/her call on if they want a volunteer nurse or not. You could also try contacting dept. directors.
