I just need to vent, reply if you want lol. Today was a hot mess. Two students have strep but family is a nurse and they are fine to be in school and then she took off real quick. Our school policy is that if they have strep they have to be excluded from school for 24 hours while the antibiotics are started....unless they have a physicians note clearing them. Family refused to come get them. Just had to vent to other nurses who may have some advice.

They were diagnosed by a doctor and were prescribed antibiotics which were filled after they returned to school, it was the family member and the students that stated they had strep not me or any teachers.

How do you know it's streptococcus? So many people call any old bad sore throat "strep" when it's most often viral. If you have done a rapid-strep in your office and have documentation, you do what you have to do. If the kids were diagnosed by a physician or ANP office with rapid-strep, they would have been given a prescription there. So I have to wonder about this.

GrnTea, My pedi doesn't give meds from the office.......they either "call it in" or "file it electronically" very little is done on paper any more. I would also have to pick it up later. Schools that my kids go to don't do any more than Tylenol for most kids. ANY child that needs more must have their"private nurse" in attendance. My kids need to be "fever free" for 24 hours before being allowed in school. So if you call them off for school and you say fever they are off for 2 days.

Nothing annoys me more than parents that allows their sick kids in school, especially when mine were little. They would be fine....if they didn't go to school. One year my daughter had strep so many times over and over.....I wanted the school/kids cultured for I knew there must be a problem. I took a more rational route....I bought cheap shaving cream, the white foam kind and had the kids "clean their desks" every day and before eating. She didn't have strep for the rest of the year.

My kids would know they had strep, even when they were little. Their pedi would tell them why their throats hurt so much and they would proceed to tell anyone who would listen that they had strep throat and could eat all the Popsicles they want.

OP I am sorry you had a bad day. You did the right thing. Those poor kids sound like they have a hard road.

I learned to literally despise parents who sent their children to school sick or failed to collect them when they were. My daughter has asthma and suffered from 5th to 8th grade with so many episodes of bronchitis and upper resp infections I lost count. It was so so stressful for her to return to school and be blasted with all the make up work she used to have anxiety attacks. They finally gave her an extra set of books so she could at least try to keep up. It created havoc with her eduction and mental health. Last year I pulled her from traditional schooling and she goes on line now. Instantly it stopped the the vicious cycle she was on.

So thank you so much! A part of this may be due to the large number of single parent homes. I too am a single parent. It is very difficult to leave work at times to pick up an ill child. Single parents depend on the fact the child will be in school x number of hours per day. I always had back up plans and had to arrange it so my daughter went to school close to family and trusted friends to broaden my back up plans and I still had challenging situations occur and had to leave work many times to get her.

First, you did the right thing. Second, I think people do this kind of stuff out of desperation. They are afraid they will lose their jobs or they get paid by the hour and desperately need the money. I really think most people want to be home with sick kids. Heart breaking. Sorry you were in an awkward spot.

Can't agree with you...the biggest offenders down here are non-working mothers who don't want to deal with their own sick kid when they have nail and shopping appointments scheduled.

OP...what COULD you have done otherwise? You did good with a rotten parent, and god forbid if a parent be unhappy at any of the minions at their precious darling's school. I'm sure you've seen what happens to teachers who try to discipline a kid. [My S.O. teaches]

Yeah we'll they sent a letter to the higher ups saying I diagnosed their kid, held them hostage in the office and was calling the parent names. I'm so offended and appalled at these lies. It's a huge investigation now and I don't want these false alligations to affect my status either. Has me worried.

You were doing what was in the best interest of the community. So what, let them complain! You're not going to be in any real trouble for being an advocate for the well being of the kids. The parents should be saying "thank you for your concern" and "rest assure we'll take care of this." If you have a positive good reputation at the school to fall back on you should be alright!

Holy crap! That totally sucks. Hmmm, let's see if the school admins support you for doing the right thing. . . .

Hopefully adm will have your back and your work ethic and history will stand on its own merit. Good Luck!

We have a 24hr policy in place for diahrrea, fever, vomiting, and antibiotics. I have a repeat offender that never follows that policy. Mom is self employed and dad is a stay-at-home. They are older parents but apparently have better things to do than care for their non-communicating autistic son.
