Please help ladies

My grandmother has bad bad diareha and my mom is trying to figure out waht to feed her that is not super gasy besides rice. and waht about to keep her hydrated? what juices? my mom has been giving her apple juice and it is of course giving her the runs.

she has pancreatitis and right has gastrointenal and is on meds but they are not helping her. what else can we do for her. she has been in out of the hospital. I am desperate

Any advice will be greatly appreiciate

I think your grandmother needs to be seen by a doctor. Depending on how long she has had this diarrhea, she may be dangerously low on electrolytes and fluid. Water is always good -- maybe some Gatorade. Stay away from juice. But, if she has health problems already, I think she needs to be seen.

Think BRAT diet.

Bannana's

R ice

Applesauce (not juice)

Tea

I've also found Philadelphia soft preztzel's helpful. These zare foods that bind, helpful for kids too.

Make sure you contact her primary care practitioner (PCP) that meds not working.

I always though T was for toast. As in plain, dry white bread toast. But I like tea better.

I want to add, getting in touch with the doctor is important.

ABSOLUTELY ! Considering her medical history, this is a must. The elderly are far more fragile when it comes to electrolyte imbalances... please be sure to let her docor know what's going on, and go from there ! :)

Triple amen to that.

We cannot offer advice without risking harm to your grandmother. Her PCP is going to be the most knowledgable about her condition and concurrent medical problems. There should be someone on call for his or her office if this is a problem that will not wait until tomorrow. Alternatively, you can always go to the ER tonight.

I hope she feels better soon.

I also thought that the "T" was for toast.

I didn't think you would give tea, since it has caffeine and can act as a diuretic.

Dehydration progresses very rapidly in the elderly population. Please get her to the ER now!

NRSKarenRN :You're making me jealous....I grew up in Phila. and I haven't seen a pretzel vender for almost 10 years. All I can find are the frozen kind in the supermarket. I'd even settle for one from wawa.

To the OP. How often is your grandma having diarrhea? Is it every time after she tries to eat or drink? The BRAT diet is great...also clear liquids in small amounts can help her avoid becoming dehydrated. You should contact the MD ASAP to make him/her aware of what is going on...MD might want to change meds, too.
