Need help how to submit my resignation a week after orientation

Hi everyone! I need your advice. I have recently relocated to Maryland about two months ago due to my husband's job opportunity in an acute hospital. I was also hired at the same hospital but at a different medsurg unit. I am currently in my last week of orientation (They gave me 6 weeks total) and will be on my own next week.

My problem is, I recently interviewed for an epic analyst position in Memphis last week. I was referred to this position by a relative of mine who also works for the same company and position. I was offered the job this week and could not let go of this opportunity because this is my dream job since I was in nursing school so I accepted the job offer. I will be starting that job opportunity on the last week of October.

My problem is: When should I submit my two weeks notice? This week during my last week of orientation or the first week when I'm on my own?? How would I explain my situation to my current employer?

I feel really guilty because my coworkers are extremely supportive of me, and my nurse manager is very nice and approachable. But I just cant let this new opportunity go to waste. I don't mind working for another two weeks so they would not have to worry about who will cover for me.

By the way, I am not a new grad. I have been an RN for three years working mainly in medsurg in Nevada.

    Given the circumstances, I think you should submit it immediately ... tell them when you last day of availability is (even if it is MORE than 2 weeks) ... and them let THEM decide whether or not they will finish your orientation ... or just use you as a helper for a couple of week ... etc. Since you are doing something "not very nice" to them, let THEM structure it the way that works best for them.

    That's the best thing you can do to help ease the burden of your unexpected departure. Give them as much notice as possible so that they can plan ahead while paying you to help out. But don't be shocked if they would prefer you left immediately. That is one possibility as they may not want to invest any more in you. But given your past work experience, they might want to keep you around for as long as you are available while they make plans to cover the holes in the schedule.

    If you know you're leaving, you should submit your resignation ASAP. You're not doing them any favor by delaying the inevitable. However, don't be surprised if they tell you you needn't bother sticking around and working your notice. And you will probably be flagged as "ineligible for rehire" at that facility (and the entire system, if the hospital is part of a larger system).

    I just had that happen to me as well - I was nearly off orientation when I got an offer from another hospital (it was a $7 an hour raise plus the commute dropped from 40 miles to 10 miles) - I gave a months notice (since the new hospital started nursing orientation on the first Monday of every month) and they chose to not have me work out the notice - I was able to change my start date at the new hospital from October to this past week so it did work out in the end.

    Tell them you're moving to Memphis-- I am assuming that's not a commuting distance from Maryland? Or is it a telecommuting job, or..? Am I missing something?

    Agree that you tell them right now, offer to stay to help out until the very last minute, and let them know how much you appreciate all they've done for you.

    I agree tell them immediately, but don't say you are leaving specifically for a new job. That just adds insult to injury. Either say "something came up" or you are entering witness protection and you are relocating. Let them speculate, lol.

    I'd be more concerned about the repercussions for my husband who will be left behind at this hospital. Yes, you work on different units but people talk.
