Need help preparing for the Hesi A2 Entrance Exam

U.S.A. Michigan

Published

I bought the study guide but I have heard it is not much help when preparing for this test. I will be taking it in Nov at MCC. I was wondering if anyone bought "Hesi Test Secrets" from Morrison Media. It is $40, but it is worth it?

Any study advice would be appreciated!

hi everyone! wow- i'm so glad i stumbled across this forum! it has been extremely helpful as i'm getting ready to take the hesi in the beginning of next month =) i'm trying to get into uthsc in houston, and i'm required to take the math, reading, vocab & gen. knowledge, grammer, a&p, learning/personality styles, and critical thinking portions. honestly, i'm the most worried about the critical thinking. i've heard that it is mostly about triage, where you have to assess what to do first in a healthcare setting. how are we supposed to know such things, if we haven't yet gotten into nursing school?! do you guys have any tips for the crit. thinking portion if you've taken it already? i'm so nervous!!

also, i can't seem to find out much information about the format of the exam itself. it is frustrating since uthsc doesn't provide any details and they just switched to the hesi a2 from the net. i've never taken a computer-based test before, so i was wondering if any of you know the answers to my concerns:

1. is there a calculator provided? (i've heard from some that there's a basic online one, while others tell me you don't have access at all.)

2. do they give you scratch paper?

3. is it possible to skip ahead to the next question if you're stuck and then later go back to it? if other words, can you click back to change your answers?

4. for the reading comprehension, do the passages stay on the same page as you navigate through the questions, or do you have to constantly scroll back?

5. is each individual section of the test timed, or is the entire test as a whole timed?? my registration info said i have a total of 4 hrs to take it. when i looked up the recommended times for ea. section i need to take & added them up, the time actually went over the 4hr limit o.o have any of you who've taken the test had any trouble finishing it w/i 4hrs??

6. lastly, any tips/links/websites/etc. on how to study for the critical thinking part?? i don't have a healthcare background, and i'm at a total loss on how to study for this!

artofgrace: do you still happen to have those 2 study guides you had mentioned?? i would be extremely grateful if you could email them to me! since i'm fairly new on this site, i don't think i can pm you my addy. but it's just my exact username at gmail :)

thank you guys so much in advance for any comments/answers!!

Each test is a little bit different, and different schools have different rules. Hesi asks the schools to not allow scratch paper, but we got around that by using paper they provided and turning it back in at the end of the test. Wehad a very simple calculator, no fractions or anything. It was actually part of the test itself. Each question had a link - click here to show the calculator. You can not go back, your stuck answering one at a time. For ours, we were given a set time period. The tests show up on a single screen and you click whichever subject you want to do. Once you finish that subject, ittakes you back to that screen, and you are immediatly shown your score. You then can click on the next subject. Math and grammar were 55 questions each, critical thinking was 30. For reading, the passage stays on the screen along with your question. The passages I got were pretty short, 4 - 5 paragraphs. I had 4 hours to do 5 sections, but I finished in 2 hours. Remember for critical thinking, serve the immediate needs first... Bleeding trumps crying, that kind of thing. Hope this helps, good luck!

ArtofGrace do you think you can send me those 2 practice test you have? I cannot PM here since I'm fairly new to this forum. My email is [email protected]. Thank you!

Yesitslaura,

Can you give me some details about grammar and critical reading, I have the test Tuesday and I am so scared:crying2:

I thought they were extremely easy. I have a college degree and didn't study at all and got a 97%... I wouldn't worry!!

Yes, for a person who's first language is English it might be but for me English is my secomd language, therefore, I need to ask you for some details ( the position of main ideea was mostly at the begining of the passage or it was mostly something that one needs to infer, also the inferences were easy to conclude from the text) in grammar was there anything that has to do with the simmilar words (lie lay) vocab beside the words that were from the book what other words were there, something that we use every day?

Thanks for thaking the time to answer.

I had the hardest time with trying to figure out inferences. Often they gave 2 words that were very similar and could easily have both been right. "Was this author feeling pessimistic, or gloomy?" However, the other 2 types of questions, the answer is usually right there in the paragraph. It will ask you if something was stated, and all you have to do is go back and read it word for word. Not difficult, just time consuming. Do the practice tests over and over. It will teach you how to think. Yes, they did use lie and lay! (Just remember that lay means to place, and lie means to recline, the words kind of sound like their meanings.)

Here is some more information that I told someone else about it -

Remember each test is a little bit different. The grammar didnt have anything like "point out the pronoun/noun in the sentence" so you probably dont need to worry about specific preposition lists or anything. (Which i wondered if i needed to memorize them!) It did have a couple sentences, and it would say which part of this sentence is dependent, or which part/phrase belongs at the end of the sentence. Questions are very similar to the practice ones in the guide. One question had 4 sentences using bad/badly, i had to choose the correct usage of the word. He and I. among and between. The math did have a lot of word problems, but none of them were especially difficult. 10 kids in a class, 56 cookies, how many can each kid have. fraction, decimal, percents, tons of ratios, roman numeral, military time. Plenty of conversions, lb to kg, gram to oz, etc. turn the ratio into a percent. How many mm in a cm. Vocab was all over the place! At least 15 of the words were straight from the book. Nothing too bad but kinda random... democracy, overt, ravenous, imply, concave. Know the ones in the book. They had a couple anatomy terms. One was saggital i think? During reading, read the question carefully. The answer is often obvious. They like to ask "What was the author trying to say..." Honestly, if you know that book I think you will do great! Almost everyone got done bfore the time was up... we were given 4 hours, i finished in about 2. So take your time and just read it all carefully. Best of luck to you!

To answer your other question, I cant remember if they were in the book or not, but they did also have their theyre there, it's its, to too two.

Does anyone have the PDF or anything for the study guide to the Hesi? I really need it

Hello everyone! Recently found this site. I am applying to Chamberlain College of Nursing in Addison IL. I was told to purchase the Hesi A2 study guide. Is there a Hesi as well. I'm not sure if any of you have used this study guide but wanted to know if you can share tips on what books you found helpful. I want to take the test within the next 3 weeks. Thanks! Can anyone share any tips or info? Would greatly appreciate it!

ntorres,

Yes, there is a Hesi entry exam and one exit exam. Hesi A2 is also different, it depends on the college you apply to.

Some colleges require one to be examined from Math, Reading comprehension, Vocabulary, Grammar, Chemistry, Anatomy and Physics. Knowing all this, it will help you chose the right study guide.

I personally had only the first 4 mentioned above, so the study guide helped me a little but not much,( math was helpful but the vocab it wasn't, grammar was helpful). I had the evolve study guide and the secret.

This web site will give you a lot of details, I posted a lot of information and many other people were also helpful by posting info about the exam they had; and their personal experience and some of the content.

Therefore, I suggest that you go to the student page and type "Hesi 2010", and you will be as grateful as I was by reading the info posted here in spite of the fact that it took me a lot of time to read all the comments posted, I found some other websites that helped me in different ways.

As I said, each experience it was different, for some the study guide was helpful in some ways, for others it was not so helpful. Now, you will decide what it can help you, but here you'll find a lot of info.

Good lack and may God bless you.
