my instructor called me in for a clinical warning and decided to fail me on the spot for a critical error for the patient not receiving O2. It was on the patient care summary as an anxillary order(secondary). Therefore, it was not a critical mistake, it wasn't that important.

if my instructor wasn't looking for something to fail me, she would have paid more attention to the patient care summary and nursing orders!!

I would definately appeal and hopefully she'll think twice before she does something like that again. It would be documented at the hospital as well so you have proof. That might require some legal help though to protect patient privacy but I would fight her.

now, wait. Is that the whole story? Did you NEVER have any other instance of a clinical problem? Myself, I got a clinical warning for a med error on a LTC client, and I knew that if I ever made the same mistake again...I'd be out. Probably will be true for every other semester too.

Was there any kind of patient condition that required them to be on O2 continously? Did something change and O2 was required, but you failed to catch it? Or was this something that O2 had no bearing on the patient whatsoever?

We would need a few more details to help us understand what feedback to give you. Give us what you can.

It would also help us to know how much longer you have left before graduation and how feasible it is for you to be accepted to another program in a reasonable time.

I was in my third semester, and had two to go. I have had other problems in clinical before. My first clinical instructor was the Dean of the school, and she gave me a hard time. I had failed an exam and she didn't think I was going to make it. She abused me to no end, screaming at me continuously. Telling me she didn't think I belonged there. She also did not make me do anything in clinical (give meds, etc.) thinking I wasn't going to pass the lecture. However, I did pass the lecture and she ended up giving me an incomplete in clinical and made me come to the hospital and work with her for two days to do what she should have made me do during my regular clinical. In the school I was attending, there is less then a 25% graduation rate. If they don't like you or if they feel you don't fit in, they will find some reason to get rid of you!

Like i said it was an ancillary order, if the patient needs it. She had nasal canulla the day before for a short time and then decided to take it off for the remainder of the day. The next day when my instructor asked me what my patient was missing (O2) and if she had it on the day before I said no. When my instructor had stopped by the 1st day my patient had the nasal canulla on and then took it off. So when she asked me if she had it on the day before I said no. She only had it on for about 10 minutes and not the majority of the day. If it is not listed under nursing orders, I don't think I should be sited for a critical error.

Normally, you do not fail clinical for one mistake. The school I am attending, you have three warnings before you can fail clinical. This past semester, everyone passed clinical. It this is your first mistake, I hope you are able to get back to the program. Good luck to you.

hi,
I was recently failed in a clinical course for a bogus reason. I was offered an appeal by the dean, and don't know if I should go back if I win the appeal. This school has a very poor graduation rate, and being a student there I can see why. They favor some students over others and go after the ones they don't like. Is it like this everywhere? Should I go back to this program or apply to a different one? Please help!!

Did you take her O2 sat before deciding she didn't need O2? Regardless, it's the instructor's job to oversee all pt care by students and it's sometimes best to question any order you aren't sure about. Our instructor would make sure and remind not to forget certain things ahead of time not only to help us, but to also save her own butt.

If you think you could transfer to another school, then it'll be a lot easier for you since you're almost done with the program. But if you think you can stick it out and you have a chance, then you may as well finish there because it's a pain in the ass to transfer to some schools! Good luck and if you have to, just kiss major ass to make it through.
