This letter is to express my interest in the Registered Nurse position at Providence Medical Center. I am an enthusiastic candidate with the skills and attributes necessary to contribute to the patient care at your healthcare facility. I am passionate about nursing and knows that patient care requires a solid foundation in nursing skills and techniques, organization and prioritization of care, and communication skills. These skills, along with my compassion, patience, and patient advocacy, are what I offer as a registered nurse.

For the past year I have worked as an integral part of the busy team at the _____ Surgery Center as a Preoperative and PACU nurse. My experience as a Pre op and PACU nurse has given me exceptional capacity to multitask, ability to conduct assessment to patients upon admission, manage critical care patients after surgery, and competing priorities easily while also delivering superior care.

In addition, my experience as a Phlebotomist has given me ample opportunity to work with the patient population I feel my knowledge of medical terminology, customer service and medical computer software would be a valuable asset. With this experience, I have developed strengths in communication, collaboration, and information technology. If the position at hand requires key attributes such as professional, reliable, competent and compassionate, I feel I would be a strong candidate and would appreciate being considered.

During my clinical experiences at Providence Medical Center, Alaska Native Medical Center, Alaska Regional, Alaska Psychiatric Institute and Pioneer Home, I obtained a wide range of nursing skills on the job, while developing critical thinking skills. I was praised by clinical instructors for my eagerness to learn and ability to multi-task.

I welcome the opportunity to discuss with you how I might best fulfill the present needs for the Registered Nurse position at your health care facility. Until then, thank you for your consideration and I look forward to meeting with you.

Sincerely,

This info belongs in your resume instead of the cover letter. You should have a standard resume that highlights your experience, skills, etc and then a cover letter for each position you apply to. Cover letters can be very simple. Two or three sentences are fine, more only if you truly have more to say. They should not repeat what you have in your resume, ever. You should never use the same cover letter for two different companies, that is the opposite of the point.

A cover letter should specifically address the person doing the hiring. It should tell something you know about the company/position (do research). It should explain why you want to work there as opposed to all the other places you could work. A cover letter is also where you would name drop, or tell the employer who you already know who works there. Make it concise and most importantly no repetition of info in your resume. Remove excess words.

Example:

Dear Ms Lacey,

My cousin, Debbie Smith, who works as an RN on your med-surg floor informed me of the opening for an RN in your mother-baby unit. I would be honored to work for Babylon General, which has been rated "best place to have your baby" by Babylon magazine for the last three years. This position is in line with my professional goals to support new mothers and babies in the best environment possible. Please see my attached resume. I look forward to an interview.

Sincerely,

Maybe this is specific to nursing, but in my previous career (research) the cover letter was in fact used to highlight specific, pertinent, details of your work history to get the reader interested in your resume before it gets round filed.
