Nursing Therapeutic Communication - What is the best Nurse response on the following?

Can you please tell me what is the best response to this statement if you are a Nurse?

1. Patient: "I can't be lying in this bed, I have to go home, I have to work and my children need me!"

2. Patient: "I'm just not myself since my blood pressure pill changes, I'm always tired!"

3. Patient: "What's going on? First, they say they have to operate, and then when I'm beginning to feel better, I get this infection. I don't think I'm ever going to get out of here!"

4. Patient: "I'm terrified of injection!"

5. Patient: "You think my doctor would have prevented me from getting Phlevitis? But he's too busy to care about what's happening to me."

6. Patient: (fidgeting) "Nobody cares. My doctor wants me to go - just on home?

7. Patient: "Nobody around here gives a royal hoot what happens to me."

8. Patient: "Well, my bhusband had a car accident last year. He had to give up driving and he's been do downever since. I'm afraid for him being by himself for so long."

9. Patient: "The doctor told me I needed a bunch of tests, because there is a lump in my neck."

None so far...please help!

Well, then if you've gotten none so far then you need to think a little longer and harder and come up with some responses before I'll even help you. I am NOT doing your homework for you.

We'll help you with it but we won't do it for you.

yeah...it's really not right for you to bring your homework on here when you haven't given it any effort. I'm in nursing school also, and can easily think of therapeutic responses to those questions.....think on it a little longer, and I'm sure you can, too. :)

Physical Examination & Health Assessment by Carolyn Jarvis does an very good job of covering the 10 techniques of interviewing, plus therapeutic communication. I think ch 4 & 5 are best to start with. Check whatever book you're using for HA under communication techniques.

I was going to start posting answer but the other people who answered before me are correct: you need to start (somewhere!) and then we'll help.

Good luck.

nursing therapeutic communication - what is the best nurse response on the following?

can you please tell me what is the best response to this statement if you are a nurse?

1. patient: "i can't be lying in this bed, i have to go home, i have to work and my children need me!"

~you must be very worried about them. who is taking care of them now?

2. patient: "i'm just not myself since my blood pressure pill changes, i'm always tired!"

~what time of the day are you the most tired? are you having any other symptoms?

3. patient: "what's going on? first, they say they have to operate, and then when i'm beginning to feel better, i get this infection. i don't think i'm ever going to get out of here!"

i'll bet it seems that way sometimes. it sounds very stressful.

4. patient: "i'm terrified of injection!"

what can i do to make it less stressful for you?

5. patient: "you think my doctor would have prevented me from getting phlevitis? but he's too busy to care about what's happening to me."

doctors are very busy people, i agree about that! phlebitis is a complication that occurs to some people and not others. it's frustrating that it happened to you, i'll bet!

6. patient: (fidgeting) "nobody cares. my doctor wants me to go - just on home?

you must be feeling pretty low. who do you have to talk to? your doctor must think you've recovered well enough to go home.

7. patient: "nobody around here gives a royal hoot what happens to me."

what makes you feel that way?

8. patient: "well, my bhusband had a car accident last year. he had to give up driving and he's been do downever since. i'm afraid for him being by himself for so long."

do you have anyone who can help with him? would you like to talk to the social worker here? they are good at arranging help for those who need it.

9. patient: "the doctor told me i needed a bunch of tests, because there is a lump in my neck."

and how does that make you feel?

Ok - let's just hope the poster appreciates this info - we have now provided examples as well as online resources, so fingers crossed, they will go a little further and come up with some more answers.

Thanks everyone for your help.

I strongly agree with the majority of Nurses' that we can not do this for you ,if you can't figure this out maybe you should not be in this field, I do not wan't to sound harsh nor rude ,however I have been a nurse for 22 yrs.I have worked very hard as we all do, if you are truly dedicated to being a nurse all of you're questions are very easy to answer not to mention what will you do when you are at work and have a full assignment or are charge nurse? I wish you luck.

you will find weblinks on the student forums of allnurses that will help you formulate your answers to these statements. i've printed them here for you:
