I am a Registered Nurse in the Philippines since April 2011. We, my husband and I, were petitioned to the US by my stepson and both applications got approved last month. Now we're just waiting for our US immigrant visa to be process. It would only take about 3 months to get the visa from the time the National Visa Center received our approval (this is the info i got from a forum of US immigrants). But since my husband is working overseas right now we have to delay it a little longer since his contract will expire January 2014. So tentatively if there would be no problem along the way we will be leaving by 1st quarter of 2014. So it means I only got 10 months from now on.

Now my question is, where do you think I should process my NCLEX application? Should I process it here now while I'm still in the Philippines or should I wait till we get to the US and have my SSN# then start applying at the State BON where we will live?

The advantages of processing here is that when we get to the US I just have to schedule my exam at Pearson Vue then take the exam there. So waiting time to get a USRN license, if i will pass the first time take, is lessen; therefore the sooner Iwill get an RN job offer. As compared to doing all the process of application in the US where I don't have any clue of how long it would take to finish the whole thing from credentialing to ATT(Authority to Test).

Now the disadvantage of processing here in the Philippines is that I need to pass an IELTS exam first before I could proceed with the credentialing since it is a pre-requisite. Whereas, if I process my application when I get to the US this step is omitted and will start on credentialing then if approved will have ATT. Aside from that, there will be other expenses that will be incurred during the process since an agency is going to do the whole thing. Of course they will get paid for doing the process for me. I need to use an agency because I don't have the SSN# needed to apply to Virginia's Board of Nursing since this is needed in their application form.

To sum it up, processing in the Philippines is longer and costly than processing in the US. Although 10 months of waiting before we leave for the US is just enough to process my NCLEX application and just took the exam there.

Aside from that, do you think I should take a review here before we leave for US or should I just wait to get an ATT before I attend review sessions?

I just want to get some consensus, inputs, and insights. If you think that I have misunderstood some things in the application process for NCLEX please feel free to correct me. Your comments will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I'm from the Philippines and I graduated BSN March 2010. Acquired my local registered nurse license April 2011. Hopefully we'll get our immigrant visa next year. Once we get to Virginia and have my SSN#, will apply immediately for NCLEX RN eligibility in Virginia Board of Nursing and take my exam there. However, I got news from a batchmate and she's now living in Texas that validity to take NCLEX RN Exam should be 4 years from the time of school graduation. If it's beyond 4 years, I need to attend school again before getting NCLEX RN exam. I just would like to know if there's any truth to this since my 4 years will expire by March 2014.

Thank you.

Thank you.

just apply in New Mexico.

Virgina requires an English test beside from NCLEX coz you're a foreign grad nurse.

Specializes in Complex pedi to LTC/SA & now a manager.

Once you are a resident of a compact state like VA you are barred from applying to another compact state like NM as per the rules if the nursing license compact. (Until you change your state of permanent residence) Your application will be returned.

I am registered nurse from the Philippines and is now in Virginia holding CR1 visa. I just want to know what are the requirements for taking nursing exams here. Do I need to take NCLEX, CGFNS and TOEFL or IELTS? I am confused and i really don't know what and where to start. I got my SSN. Or do i have to take all those examinations which i s very costly? How much will be the payments for the exams? If Virginia needs CGFNS which i do not want to take if possible because of the expenses, is it allowed for me to take the exams in the nearby states who don't require CGFNS? (which i don't know also what states). Please advise. Thanks

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.

Look at the requirements for International nurse on the state BON website, links can be found at the bottom of the page, because that is what you are. Doesn't matter that you have a SSN you trained outside the US therefore have to meet requirements.
