Need advice on a new job

Published

Hi All,

I recently interviewed for a great job. It's exactly what I wanted to do for awhile, to work in a skin and laser center. Throughout my nursing career, I have only worked in hospital settings and wanted a less stressful change. Became interested in skin & aesthetic services but didn't really move forward with that. So now this opportunity comes my way, the doctor is willing to train. Sounds great right?? Except it is approx 1 1/2- 2 hour drive depending on traffic from where I live. It will start off as part-time, 2 days a week and progress to full-time at some point. The question is should I say "yes", go forward and see what happens. Or say "no" because of the commute? So torn, can anyone give me thoughts, especially those that commute long distances for jobs.

Thanks!!

If it's something I really wanted to do, I would try it. Even if only for the experience. Can you move closer,? Or stay closer for the 2 days you will be working? In my experience it has been not very easy to get experience in other areas with higher degrees. If you can the experience go for it! YOLO right?!?! LOL

Right out of school, I was offered every new grad's dream: an acute care position on a medical inpatient floor with a retention bonus. Downside? It's a 90-minute commute with no possibility of my moving closer. I had to think about it, but honestly, the sacrifice for a year or so makes it worth it. It could be temporary, but a position like that may never come along again. Say yes.

That drive part time wouldn't be bad.. Full time it would be a no go for me. That's a 4hr drive some days.

Left out the most important thing now

Are you currently working? Full time?

Because if youre quitting a full time job, for a part time job far away. Thats a huge financial decision

That is too much commute IMO unless the salary will offset some of that.

Do you NEED full time hours at this point? That job could remain part time and not progress to full time so I would not accept if full time was a must.
