Need some advice: NAU vs GCU for RN to BSN program

U.S.A. Arizona

Published

I'm having a tough time deciding which route I should take. I currently have an ADN. I want to get my BSN. Do I go to NAU which I only need 3 more prerequisites for their BSN program or do I go to Grand Canyon University which I don't think I will need any more prereqs in. Someone I spoke with from GCU said it cost about 400 or 450 a credit, I'm not sure how much NAU cost. What do you guys think?

Sent you a PM...

gcu would be way more expensive than nau! i know everyone has their own personal opinions, but i'd chose a state school over some not-so-well-known, religious affiliated, private school any day. if you ever chose to get your master's, i can see the decision committee scratching their head saying "what is gcu?" sorry...that might sound stupid, but that's the thought that runs through my head at least.

this is sooooooo not meant to be a bash on gcu, as i know they are a fine school and put out good nurses. you just asked for opinions so i gave you mine.:smokin:

what pre-req classes do you have left for nau? good luck either way!!!

This is a really tough decision. I talked to a rep today. She said 36 credits at GCU, 14000 dollars total I think, or around there. No other pre-reqs I would need to take.

The pre-reqs for NAU is Stats, Nutrition, and Patho. I'm already registered for Stats (online) through Yavapai College where I got my ADN it and Nutrition at PIMA (online) because they offer it there, and it would be cheeper than going to NAU this semester for those classes. If I go to NAU I plan on it in the Spring.

I wish some people from Grand Canyon University would post here so I could get their opinion too. Really really hard decision for me to make. HA! what do I do :angryfire?!

I don't know. You know what the weird thing is, is that my hospital would push it's nurses to go to Grand Canyon even though we are right next door to UofA. Kind of weird.

Well, the U doesn't offer RN-BSN. Otherwise, they'd push it too. They must have an agreement with them. Have you looked into your hosptials tuition reimbursement programs? For instance, most hosptials pay for GCU upfront with a 2 yr work promise, etc.

Curious...Stats, nutrition and patho aren't pre-reqs at GCU? Are they included in the program?

Patho and stats is. Nutrition I took the 1 credit course at yavapai because the 3 credit one was sooooo boring that I dropped it twice. At least now Pima offers it online, yavapai was full

So they are co-reqs?

Oh ya, because of the economy, my hospital doesn't offer the reinburstmemt anymore. I didn't know u of a didn't havean rn to bsn

Seriously!?! No tuition reimbursement anymore???

Wow! I guess I need to finish up quick while I still have it....

Since you need to do all three at some point anyway, go with NAU... Soooo much cheaper! Get your 3 pre-reqs done this fall and apply away.

I think that you may be right. I'm taking the other two at a community college though because it's way cheaper and they transfer. The online Patho I need is filled. I can't take it til next year. I have to do online cause I'm a distant learner. I think you may be right though. I should just stick with NAU. I will just have to be patient.
