Need advice, just failed first semester of nursing school

Hello all!

I just finished my first semester trying to obtain my BS in nursing. I want to continue this career so badly. How can I obtain this goal?

I was so close in passing but I did not. Now that I am here, I am trying to see if I can continue and apply to other nursing programs. I will apply to any nursing school, from BSN, associates, to LVN, as long as I can become a nurse.

The question I have to ask is, will it look bad in my record if I have failed my first semester of nursing school? I live in the state of TX and I have called some BSN schools and they say they don't accept students that have failed. I don't know what to do. Should I just consider associates or LVN?

I am even considering applying to other nursing schools in other states, and I was wondering how are other programs in accepting students like me.

One more thing, should I start applying again now, or should I wait?

I am devastated. I have been numb and crying for days. I know I will get over it. I just feel like I am alone.

Any and all positive advice will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance! :shy:

Let no one scare you, nursing school is not as easy as other careers NURSING SCHOOL IS HARD I failed my semester although it was due to having a newborn and driving 21/2 hours 3days a week I went back n passed but in my med surge the instructor screwed me up and failed me I hated her for that. I widthrew from that college n enrolled in another college I was still driving 1 hour n 20 min but I had A's in my

@itsmejuli,

I did pretty well in math and anatomy taking it at a four year university. however, i am not good a English or my verbal skills at all.

I guess I should focus on that now while I am in the process in trying to get into nursing school again.

@truckinusa-I will be looking into Oklahoma if schools in texas do not work for me. thanks for the information.

@ Annapett- I am trying my best to not let anyone get to me. it's hard, especially now since it just happen. I was like you about driving long distance to school, 2 hours, so it took a lot of study time. I now decided where ever I get in, I will get an apartment and move closer to the school. Good luck with your nursing education.

My friend failed out of nursing school and applied to SNU in Oklahoma. They took her, even knowing the fact that she got the boot from the nursing school that failed her. It's a lot of $$$ but if you really want it, then go for it! Good luck!

Thanks so much for the reply everyone!

I actually failed two courses: Health Assessment, failed by 3 points, and Fundamentals, also by a few points. But i did manage to pass Pharmacology and Patho. I can't retake those courses because in the state of TX they only allow to retake one nursing course. After that you are dismissed from the nursing program. So now I have that in my record and I can't apply to any BSN program for 5 years. I have been making lots of phone calls and emailing lots of people at different school to see if I am even able to apply.

This is news to me! Each school/program basically sets their own rules - as to what happens when you fail. The only 'state-wide' rules that I am aware of are those that pertain to accreditation - nothing about admissions or academic performance. Could this be in reference to the UT system?

I would advise the OP to personally investigate other schools' admission policies to determine if this information is factual.

I would suggest an interest inventory test. And an education assessment. You admit to problems with English, is it a second language? If so, take remedial courses. If not, perhaps you still need remedial help. Frankly, a well prepared student, barring unforseen issues, shouldn't be flunking out. Get testing done to determine where your issues lie. Good luck.

Which nursing school do you attend in TX? It sounds like the program in my school except that we can only fail two classes and the passing grade must be 74.5 or greater. I failed OB in the summer and I retook it this Fall and passed with a B.

Learn first the reason why you failed in your class before looking for a new nursing program.

So you want to be a nurse? Pull your self together and finish what you set out to do, becoming a Nurse!

Thanks so much for everyone's post. I am so grateful for each and everyone's advice. I decided to take some time off this following semester and look at the mistakes I made. I will be taking some courses like medical terminology so it can help me in the future if I do get into a nursing school again. I actually went to speak to an instructor at an ADN school and I really calmed down. I told her my history and performance at the previous school and told her what where my weaknesses. That is why I will be focusing on my study skills this upcoming semester. I've kept some nursing books but I want to ask any of you guys any suggestions on what nursing books to look at during this time off. I have Saunders comprehension review nclex rn that I will be using for fundamentals section. I also kept my health assessment book to read over again. @houtx and mbnoblez- I didn't go to ut. I went to twu.

One more thing to ask. I am planning on taking the HESI nursing entrance exam again. I previously scored over 75 % on all the subjects except vocabulary. What books did you all used to study for the exam? I have the HESI study guide but I was wondering if anyone else used other types of study guides. Thank you all in advance.

I knew someone that failed nursing school at my college. She did not give up. She took online courses from a very well known university in Puerto Rico, then her clinicals were about two months everyday, she had to fly there and live there during those months, but guess what? She graduated and is now back home working already in a hospital. I guess because Puerto Rico is somewhat part of the US, all she had to do was sit for NCLEX like I did.

If this is your calling, DO NOT GIVE UP. Get up, dust if off and continue forward, the path may be different, but your goal is the same - to be an RN.

Good luck.
