Need advice on ibtaining ER position

Since I was young I always knew I was destined to work in emergency medicine. After getting 1 degree, I returned to school for a BSN. My nursing career goals have always been to pursue a career in emergency nursing, I graduated August 2011. Here's the problem: I live in a small town with only 1 hospital. I knew I probably needed more experience to obtain an ER position, so I have applied for numerous other positions at this hospital trying to get my foot in the door and get further experience. Actually, I've applied for EVERY RN position open since I graduated. And every single time, I get a rejection letter within 3 days of submitting my application. I don't know what to do! I have BLS, PALS, ACLS, TNCC certifications. I have gotten a job at an urgent care clinic to gain "emergency" experience. I have gone in and spoke with the dept manager. I have amazing references. And, my application is still rejected over and over again. Any advice on landing this position?! I am at a loss for what to do next!

It sounds like you've done everything you can... I too think you should consider moving to a new locale.

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, moving isn't an option right now due to my spouse's job. For 11 months I commuted 2 1/2 hours (one way) for my first nursing job and it got old really fast, so I'm hesitate on commuting again. :(

Agree with other posters. Sounds like you can forget it. :-/ Are there any other hospitals closer than 2 1/2 hrs to you?

Do you know anyone that works there? Your situation sounds frustrating but don't give up. You have the certs and the assertive attitude that the ED appreciates so it's probably just a matter of time. Sometimes positions are "filled" before they're even posted so it may have nothing to do with you personally. Prehospital experience may also help...possibly look into volunteering at your local fire department.

Yes, I have a good friend that is actually an RN in the ER, and he has been telling them over and over that they should hire me. It definitely is quite frustrating! The position I commuted for was an inpatient neuro/surgical position, so I already have some hospital experience. Maybe I'm being over-assertive?! I'm not quite sure.

I worked at a place once that didn't like staff jumping departments because it created more staffing issues for them. This is shortsighted, poor management, but the reality sometimes. As a result I quit and went elsewhere because I couldn't work in the department I wanted to. I agree that's probably what you should do, but you stated you can't. How about volunteering with local EMS agencies? It would give you some experience, and it would bring you into the ER where you might make some more contacts or impressions. It would certainly give a little heft to your emergency resume. Just a thought...
