Need advice on what to do to get back into nursing after being being dismissed???

Published

Hi everyone,

I was accepted into the UT Arlington Accelerated BSN Program last Spring of 2011 and was dismissed from the program due to how vigorous and intense it was. The program was extremely hard and I would not advise anyone to do it unless you are a genius. I felt so depressed and thought my life was over once I was kicked out of nursing school. I decided to take a break to recooperate and to really figure out what I did wrong. Now, Im back and EXTREMELY DETERMINED to show everyone that I can do this. My question is "do you think the nursing programs will automatically reject me since I was kicked out of UTA's nursing program?" I know that I should apply to the ADN and even LVN programs in Dallas, but Im just scared of being rejected without being able to explain myself. Also, I was wondering if anyone could share their GPA's if they are already accepted into any nursing programs in Dallas. I am so desperate for advice. ANY ADVICE on what schools to apply for that isnt so competitive and what to do meanwhile would be GREATLY APPRECIATED. Hopefully, this will just be another bump in the road.

Do you have to tell other schools that you were dismissed?

I agree with Kooky Korky, if you don't have any evidence of the school on your transcripts do not tell them. If you do have evidence and the issue can't be avoided then you need to have a straight story of what happened and why it will not happen again. Before all this takes place though, you need to own up to being kicked out of school. It was not because of the intensity of the school, you might not have been able to handle the intensity, but own up to it. Best of luck in the future.

Just felt I had to respond to this statement. You were not dismissed due to the character of the program. You were dismissed because you were unable to meet the academic performance standards required to stay in the program. These standards were in place at the time you enrolled. Believe me, graduation from ABSN programs is not limited to geniuses. These programs are very intense. Everyone knows this, so I would imagine that your experience would not prevent admission into a traditional program.

It may not make you feel any better, but I have dealt with many ABSN grads who wished that they had chosen to go with the traditional route instead. They felt that the compressed nature of the program did not allow sufficient time to absorb many important aspects of nursing... and they did not have enough clinical exposure to become comfortable in that environment.

This may even turn out to be a blessing in disguise. Best of luck to you.

I agree. I am finishing up an accelerated BSN program, and it is no walk in the park. However, accelerated means accelerated, and many students have been successful. You have to figure out what is important to you, and realize that it is school, and it is hard for a reason. Sometimes, even harder than it needs to be, but all for a good reason.
