Need Advice on BSN or ASN!

Published

I am a freshman in the School of Nursing at Purdue University, going for my BSN.

Background info: I want to be a Labor and Delivery nurse. I spent 200 hours working with OB nurses at the hospital I hope to work at, helping them do tons of stuff and watching over 50 births. AMAZING experience, I loved it! I hope to get a job there as a tech this summer. The hospital gave me a huge scholarship.

Catch: If I have my way, I will only work for about 5 years, then be a stay-at-home mom.

Question: Should I transfer to a local small college and get my ASN since I don't want to work my way up in my career and don't want to work my whole life? Would I get hired in the Childbirth Center with just an ASN? Would I make as much money? Would I get done sooner?

Any advice would be great :)

Thanks so much!

My advice for you would be get your BSN. More and more hospitals are looking to hire BSN students instead of ASN, because of the Magnet status hospitals can receive. Also, if you wanted to go on and get your masters or NP, your BSN will help you achieve that sooner.

I agree with all the other posters and say to stick with the BSN nursing program at Purdue. I just graduated from an ADN program and am so disappointed that every hospital in San Diego county prefers the BSN. It's somewhat discouraging. Also, I think that for L&D, it would be easier to get into that field if you had a BSN. :)

Stick with the BSN. You could work per-diem once you have kids, just to get out of the house; one 12 hr shift a week is not a big deal, then when your kids go back to school and you are board you can go back full time (if you just work five years and then stop for say 7 until your kids are in school full time it will be harder to get re-hired with a gap in work)

Oh and someone was wanting to know - yes I am IN the School of Nursing..70 of us got in.

I was the one who was curious about that and will say, yes, please stay in school for the BSN. You know how competitive it is and you don't want to jeopardize your education by going for something that could, at the most, only take a year off of your journey to becoming an RN. If you were doing the prereqs and hadn't been accepted by your program yet, then it might be okay to look around, but if you're accepted and you feel like you're getting a good education, don't let anything stand in your way.

You sound very thoughtful and are wise to really think about your future. If you didn't already have a boyfriend, I'd tell you about my son who's your age! :)

I would say BSN unless you have a BA/BS in something else. I think to be competitive that you need a 4yr degree on your resume. Especially since new grads are not having an easy time getting jobs after graduation. If your already in a BSN, just stay there; no sense in going through the application process again. Plus, I transferred programs within the same college system and they wouldn't take any transfer nursing hours so I had to redo an entire semester of nursing school.
