Please help!!
Other than my family ( hubby & kids) EVERYONE else is very negative about my wanting to obtain a desire that I have had for such a LONG time...and that is to become a Nurse!
I have worked as a CNA for Years...( over 15 ). Due to many factors, I had to put my goals on hold..and now finally after all this time, I am in a place in my life when I can go back and complete what I started long ago..( I took some pre-classes off and on at our local CC...
Anyway, the negative stuff stems from my AGE....I'm in my late 40's ( very late ) but look and feel much younger!!...I been told things like..."Why bother at YOUR age", or you will encounter hard times study wise, or "you won't fit in with the normal student s age wise..and other heart breaking comments...
Please help!! I WANT to do this and if I get in,..then I WILL Do this.....Just looking for some Encouragement....Thanks!!!!
Please do not let anyone discourage you from becoming a nurse. I turned 40 during my 1st semester of my LPN Program. I have heard all of the negative things that you have heard and then some. I just look at them and tell them that when I get through I'll have a career, no matter what my age. I lost my job when my factory closed it's door in 2005. I couldn't think of anything else that I wanted to do with my life. My mother has had cancer since 1998 and many other health related problems. I guess all of those trips to the doctor's offices and hospital just got me hooked. It is harder as you get older, but I feel that I really appreciate the opportunity that I have now. I certainly don't take it for granted. I don't think that I would have worked as hard as I do now if I had done this when I first got out of high school. With age comes maturity and responsibility. I'm proud to say that I've maintained A's in all of my classes since I entered the program. On Monday I have my capping ceremony, so I'm half-way there. As soon as I finish the LPN program, I plan to bridge over to the RN. I really feel that it's better that I did it this way. The RN program is really intense at our college, and I feel that the LPN program was easier for me to make the transition of going back to school. Don't let anyone tell you that you can't do this. Oh, be prepared for everyone to ask you after you've went one semester if you're ready to graduate yet. I can't believe that people think that you can go to school for only a couple of months to become a nurse. After all, we're dealing with people's lives here. An automechanic has to go to school for a year to work on your automobile. I hope that we think that caring for a living person deserves more study than automotives. When people ask me that I just bite my lip and smile and say "not quite there yet." I'll look forward to hearing how you're doing. Just don't give up. Age is just another number.
My mother whose 86, and her younger sister ask me how long I have left in school every few months. It sometimes gets on my nerves but I just smile and continue making good grades.

I would put all of those negative comments out of your mind and do what YOU want to do. I started a LVN program this year and the ages of the students vary. There are a lot of young adults in the program, but there are also a lot of students who are in their 30s, 40s, and even one student who is in her late 50s.
It is never too late to follow your dream, and you can never go wrong when it comes to furthering your education.
Go for it! :)

I'll be starting the LPN program in August:monkeydance: . Is there a student thread for LPN students. I can't seem to find one.
I will turn 45 the day before I graduate from an RN program this June. I am the oldest in the class and, God willing, will also be the salutarian (sp?). Hardest thing I've ever done in my life, and I wouldn't trade the experience for the world. I was pushed to my limits, emotionally, mentally, and financially, and found out what I was truly made of. You go for it! Carpe diem (seize the day)!
Yeah!! I got you by 5 years. I start LPN school in August. I've taken all of my prereqs. for the RN except A&P2 and Psychology 241. My finals grade for A&P 1 was a 'B' because in this school a 'B' is a 93. I don't care what anyone says, they're not paying my bills and they'll be the 1st people calling me for assistance when I graduate.
Right On!! Groovy!!

I think the closest thread to it is this one LPN/LVN Corner. Also, the GENERAL NURSING STUDENT FORUM, and NURSING STUDENT ASSISTANCE FORUM
Oh, good grief, surely you are not going to let those kind of people dictate to you what you should do???
If you want to go to school, then go!
They are just jealous because you're going and they're not.
Let me ask you this.....since they brought up the "At your age" thing......
Since LPN school typically takes 1-2 years, according to where you are......
How old will you be in when the next 1-2 years has passed, even if you don't go to school?
You're still going to be 1-2 years older, right?
So if you do go to school, you'll be 1-2 years older and have an LPN license.
Go on to school and don't let those people dictate to you. It's YOUR life. Your dream. Go for it.

This is exactly what my mom said to me today! I just turned 48 and am considering taking a 12 month LVN course 25 miles from home. I would have to drive an hour for the associate degree and that would be more difficult right now.
I've wanted to be a nurse since going through the medical experience with my special needs son (now 14). Dh, older ds, dd, parents are very encouraging. I was concerned about my age being the barrier in getting accepted to a program. Your posts have really encouraged me!! Maybe I do have a chance! Thanks!
I really believe that I can do well in all aspects of the program. My son was very medically-involved for his first five years, so I proved to myself that certain aspects of nursing wouldn't bother me. His medical problems have been resolved, but he has problems that I'm sure are due to Hypoxia-related events. He's such a joy! Since he was NICU for seven months and the PICU for one month before heading home, I saw much--nursing, politics, patient attitudes. I'm sure it was only the surface.
Since they test in Jan, Feb, March & April, I have a wait ahead for me. I'll use that time to research, brush up on testing areas, and get my "ducks in a row".

You do have a chance. Go on to school and don't let people like that bother you.
I was 20 y/o when I went, and am 53 now. I sure have been thankful that I went when I did, because I'm divorced now, and on my own. At least now, I make a halfway decent salary and can support myself.
In my nursing class, I remember that we had at 2 ladies who were probably at least 50 y/o at the time. They did just fine. They graduated and passed state boards.
Im 33, and after totally screwing up in high school, I never gave school another thought, till I got out in the real world and realized how important education really is and the doors that it can open to you both professionally and personally. I was amom at 18, and pretty much gave up on going back, I got married at 30, had a little boy, and finally got up the nerve to go back to school. I thought forever that I would be the oldest, or I wouldnt fit in with the other students, and I thought maybe I would slack off like I did in High School. I started in July 2011, and what a diverse class it is... a great mix of women and men from 21 to over 50.... and everyone brings their own uniqueness to the table....Instead of shying away like I thought I would, most people refer to me as either the class clown, or they call me Doctor because my GPA is probably one of the highest in the class.... Turns out, I found within myself what many told me for years, " your smart, go back to school, you can do it" I never believed I would even care, Ironically, I have found within myself an intense desire to succeed, and determination that I didnt think existed.... The moral of this story is that you should do what you know is good for you, school is a WONDERFUL experience, and you are never ever too old to persue your dreams~~~~~~@!!!!!!
