Please Help!!! a Med/Admin Question??
Ok So this is one of my best courses however I am struggling with finding the correct formula : Desired Dose/ Dose on Hand multiplied by Drug Factor or DD/DOH X DF= answer. for reconsitution of Powered Drugs. Here is what I mean: a) The doctor orders Cloxacillin sodium 0.175 g IM q6h. The medication is available in a 5oomg vial. Instructions are to add 1.7ml of sterile water to yeild 2mL. How many mL(s) should be administered for one dose? I know what the doctor orders is the desired dose (0.175 g) and I think that the 500 mg is the dose on hand and the drug factor is 2 mL? So my equation should read: DD=0.175 g/DoH=500mg x 2mL I also have to convert the DoH of 500 mg to g, right? Also 1000 mg = 1 g correct? Do I have this correct? Please help. Thank you MD9

Breastfeed or else
Ok, I just wanted to see what the response to that would be to that statement. I have a true cow's milk allergy and I am allergic to soy. No one has mentioned the mere possibility that infants may in fact have allergies, and what the mother eats certainly affects the infant being breast fed. This was over 40 years ago and it was the norm back then for women to breast feed. I didn't breast feed my children and I don't feel the least bit ashamed or do I feel that I am less of a mother for it. I don't care what anyone thinks of it because whether or not I breast fed doesn't define me as a GOOD MOTHER. My kids are not less intelligent, nor do they have illnesses due to not being BF. I feel that the stance some of the posters take here on this debate is an all or nothing attitude, my way or the highway so to speak. That type of attidtude detracts from the purpose of the whole debate-to breast feed or not. It certainly doesn't add to it.

Please Tell Me What You Think
Hi Brown Eyed Girl, The format used by Carolinapooh is short, sweet to the point and full of tips for you to insert your own information. I'd suggest that one. Microsoft Word has software programs that have templates for cover letters to accompany your resume. I believe that long winded letters are usually disregarded in favor of those that to the point and easy to peruse.

Breastfeed or else
So you are saying that in lieu of breast milk ( and the above posted ways to get it) that the next best thing to feed an infant is a cow's milk based formula? Why?

Help for us and our son, sorry this is long
Hi blue heron, I am glad to hear that you have been in contact with CMHA and the Schizophrenia Society and that the hospital that your son is staying at has resources for family members. I am a big supporter of support groups because you will meet other families and friends of persons with various mental illnesses. You'll laugh, cry and comfort each other, share information, what services are available and what is helpful, share your own personal experiences, what worked for you and what didn't, but the most important thing a support group provides IMHO is the knowledge that you and your family are not alone. Please keep in mind that I am not a nurse or doctor and the information I am going to share comes from people I know who have shared their experiences with me and others. I know personally many persons living with schizophrenia as well as other disorders and without giving identifying information many of these individuals are living fulfilling lives. These individuals are compliant with treatment and they say that sometimes it takes awhile to find the right combination of medications that has the desired result for them. They say it varies from person to person, in other words what combination of medications may work for one person but may not work so well for another person. One of my friends said that her onset of schizophrenia was because of drug/alcohol use. She used drugs and alcohol as a means to mask the symptoms she was experiencing. She also said that people around her thought that she couldn't or wouldn't remember what said during the times she was experiencing psychosis and she was adamant that she remembered and was aware of what people said around her and about her when she was experiencing psychosis. She did acknowledge that only after she was out or not experiencing psychosis and had a level of wellness that she could put her experiences in perspective. She said she felt afraid when she was ill and said that was the worst part for her. I am not by any means trying to scare you or give you any kind of expectations. I just wanted to share with you what my friend has shared with me and with others. She is a very couragous person and a wonderful advocate for those living with a diagnosis of mental illness as are the many more that bravely risk so much to educate any and all who will listen. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your son during this difficult time.

Special-Needs for Returning SN Dropout?
Hi, I agree with the points Earl58 and EricEnfermero made within their respective posts, however, if Nursing is what you really want to do as a career please take the time to research what support servives are available at the nursing school you are interested in attending. If there aren't any available at that particular school/university check with other schools/universities and see what they have to offer. The following information is based upon what our university provides for students with a disability. They have an entire department specifically for students with visible and invisible disabilities, including mental illnesses. They even have information for funding specific for students with these issues and guidelines for arranging alternate accommodations for tests, exams, assignments, and even for laboratory settings to name a few of the services they provide. These guidelines are not only for the students but for the professors/instructors as well. At the school I will be attending there are counseling services available for the students. If you are committed to becoming a nurse, at the very least you have nothing to lose and possibly everything to gain by doing this research. I am not trying to give you false hope just information that would help with what would be an important decision to make for anyone living with a disability. Also your therapist will be an invaluable resource and having a support system in place is also very helpful as I am sure you already know. Good luck!

Help with an annoying classmate
I also have to add another experience that I recently had with someone. This person gave me all the wrong information about what I would need for nursing school, including information about what we wear/shoes, the wrong start and time for the first day, etc. This person acted as friendly and helpful as could be, she went on to inform me that she had been in constant contact with the Admin Assistant of the school we are both attending. I know for a fact that she was going to see the Admin. Assistant of school to drop off certificates, etc., that same day because that was the deadline to have this information in. I also mentioned that I was going to be dropping by the school to drop off my information as well. Now I know to always check information regardless of the source, but what about if I didn't do that? Starting nursing school is expensive, if I or anyone else did go ahead and purchase the items this person said that we had to have for nursing school, then I would set myself financially behind not to mention how foolish I'd look for not checking this information out with the school first before I purchased anything. I hope that if there was anyone else she helpfully provided this information to had enough sense to check it out with the school before going ahead and purchasing anything.

Help with an annoying classmate
Not too long ago I witnessed something similar to this. Our instructor gave one lady in our class instructions for a practice exercise. As soon as the instructor left the room one of the girls in the class proceeds to repeat the instructions that the instructor gave to this lady, no probelm there right? Except the instructions the girl repeated to the lady were completely different form what the instructor actually said! Why do people feel the need to do this? It only caused confusion for this lady who seemed nervous enough as it was.

Nursing with a Southern Accent
Try having a Newfie accent! I have been all over Canada and visited the US, South West Texas where my best friend lives. I am very proud of my heritage and my accent. Everyone that I have encountered did not treat me any differently than anyone else. The accents here vary region to region. I have a very heavy Southern Shore accent. That would be an Irish accent. We do as Newfoundland people experience stigma associated with the way we speak and our culture. To each his/her own. I take care to enunciate and be articulate when I speak in a clear manner so even though I have an accent everyone can understand what I am saying.
