2nd times a charm!!!!!

I just wanted to let everyone know that I passed my second NCLEX RN attempt. It only took an hour and a half to finish my 75 questions. I felt it was a good bit easier than my first test, which I failed in 120 questions. My test had a lot of delegation ?'s, no math, no check all that apply, and one question on PPD and Haldol. I also had a few ?'s on MS that were quite hard. I was really nervous before the first test and didn't really even stress over it this time. I was also a little better prepared this go around. I did all of the saunders disk except peds and mental health, and I also did the Kaplan disk you get with the review course. The saunders disk is worth 100 times it weight in gold as it pretty much hits on all the important areas and the rationales are great, but the questions are really easy compared to boards. The questions on Kaplans disk are really close in wording and difficulty to the ones seen on boards, but the rationales need some work. I wouldn't waste my money on the Kaplan course if you know someone with the test disk. I worked as a tech for the last 8 weeks and it was a real humbling experience and helped motivate me to get my crap together and pass this test.

Don't give up and let this test beat you. I saw some stuff on my test I have never seen and I still passed. Don't get upset because the test doesn't shut off at 75?'s. I did this the first time and pretty much started clicking answers. Good Luck.

CONGRATULATIONS, RN!!!! :biggringi :biggringi :balloons: reading your post made me more motivated and inspired to pass my exam the second time....I'm scheduled to retake it on 11-26...I have been using the saunders CD, practicing 100-200 questions a day..so far I have answered closed to 2000 questions and I'm feeling a little better with answering the questions. I also have the Kaplan CD that one of the posters here let me borrow ( she took the review and passed ). So I'm hoping that by the end of this month, I'll be saying the same thing! So how did you utilize the saunders CD? Please share with us how it worked for you...Congratulations again!

Monday-Friday I would do anywhere from 50-250 questions a day. I did the areas I was weaker in more than once and would also read my med surg book if I had any doubt of my understandingo of a particular area. I think in all I did around 3,000 questions not counting the few areas I did twice. The first time I failed I was below the passing standard in basic care and comfort, and near the passing standard in all the other areas. The reason I didn't do well on the first test is because I had 4-5 questions on assistive devices that I didn't have a clue on. If I would have done saunders the first time I would have probably passed because it answered all my assistive device questions. A tip: In a immunosupressed pt. if you see 5mm duration with ppd for a tb test it is considered positive.

Edit: GOOD LUCK on your second attempt. It is just a test.

DBlack1......Thanks for the tips....You have mentioned about assistive devices...It's so funny because I always get confused with this devices ( crutches and cane...I think I'm good with the walker)..Eventhough I try to picture myself using one I just can't seem to grasp the way...Correct me if I'm wrong...With the use of a crutch, say the left leg is the affected leg, proper use would be advance the crutches then followed by the affected leg then the good leg (crutches-bad leg-good leg); when do you use the swing through with the crutches? Then is it the same principle with use of a cane? Hold the cane with the unaffected arm, advance the cane followed by the bad leg then the good leg?? Sorry, I'm sure now that you're done and nailed the dreaded exam, the last thing you would wanna do now is rethink...Thanks, again:)

3 pt gait = Advance the crutches and the Affected leg

2 pt gait = Advance the R leg followed by the L crutch

The cane is the proper length if the elbow is bent 30 degrees.

congratulations!!!:balloons:

Hi DBlack1,

What kind of Kaplan cd did you use? Is it from the new Kaplan book? or the Questions trainer (7 cd's)? I have the 7 CD's test which I didn't use yet. I am still busy with my friend "Saunders. Let us know what Kaplan cd did you use??

Thanks a lot for your good advice for our NCLEX study.
