Nclex in canada jan 5 2015: Let's meet here

World Canada CRNE

Hello everybody,

I hope you all had a great holiday....I did! I also had to study most of the time.

Tomorrow January 5th 2015 will be the first time NCLEX will be administered in Canada, how excited are you?

This purpose of this thread is to identify with all candidates who are preparing for this exam (Both Canadian graduates and Internationally educated nurses like myself). I have searched for a similar thread but found none as I don't want to believe I am in this all by myself. This is a place to share our hopes and expectations, preparation strategies, test dates, celebrate our successes and encourage each other and every other thing in between!

I am using Kaplan Online review, Saunders Comprehensive NCLEX-RN 6th Edition, Pearson Comprehensive Review for NCLEX-RN, Prioritization, Delegation and Assignment (La Charity), NCLEX Success, NCLEX 3500, I am planning to purchase 5 week pass for the NCSBN, also, I am practicing questions from lots of online sources. I study for 8-10 hours a day!

If you are also preparing for the NCLEX please share your preparation strategies so that we can all learn.

Thanks

Specializes in Vents, Telemetry, Home Care, Home infusion.

Please remember that the Canadian NCLEX nursing exam is based on CANADIAN nursing standards, not US. I would not rely on US examination prep courses, instead focus on understanding Canadian nursing concepts, laws and regulations

Registered Nurses (RNs) receive legal authority to use the title registered nurse” or RN” through provincial and territorial legislation and regulation. RNs practise in all provinces and territories in Canada and across the full range of clinical care, education, administration, research and policy settings.

The Framework for the Practice of Registered Nurses in Canada [PDF, 1.2 MB] was originally published in 2007. It promotes a common understanding of the current practice of RNs in Canada. Given the large number of regulated and unregulated care providers, it is important for policy- and decision-makers and employers to clearly understand the competencies and contributions of RNs and to know in what situations an RN is most appropriate.

Created through a national working group and consultation process, the framework is a resource for RNs as they work with others in planning a health-care system that is responsive to the needs and priorities of Canadians.

Key Elements include:

  • Definition of RN
  • Theoretical foundation of the practice of RNs
  • Professional practice
  • RN careers
  • The impact of RN's

The laws and regulations that are applicable to American nurses have been removed from the NCLEX for Canadian nurses and will be assessed by jurisprudence exam, not by NCLEX. The OP is on the right track with their study material.

Thank you for your contribution!

I had been prepared to write the CRNE before the change but missed the last date. I was very concerned about this issue when I started preparing for the NCLEX, however, information available revealed that the same NCLEX that is applied to US candidate will be used for Canadians. Please see the FAQ on NCSBN website:

https://www.ncsbn.org/4702.htm

Could you please verify if this information is accurate.

Also, Canadian candidates who took the NCLEX exam today can provide us with more information.

Since the CRNE is no longer in effect, the CNA (ASI) has no input into the development or content of the exam. The information contained in NCSBN FAQ is accurate.

I took the NCLEX in Canada on Jan 6. OP, I think the resources you're using sound great - very similar to what I used. Of course, I have no idea yet how I did ;) they aren't kidding when they say everyone thinks they failed, but I'll let you know how it went when I hear! There was some content that felt more American based in terms of "unlicensed assistive personnel" and a few legal terms that you will be well equipped for with Kaplan. Lab values and measurements are included in both Canadian and American values, and medications are included with generic names only. The NCSBN have this all available on their website too, but there's a ton of info to wade through and I know those were a couple things I was really concerned about. Best of luck to you!

Hello Kristin3, congratulation! Thanks for sharing! Have you received feedback yet about your result?

Hi Signorina,

Have you taken the Nclex yet? I'm wondering how you like the Kaplan online review? I'm planning on purchasing on demand review by Kaplan. I also have Saunders, La Charity, and test strategies by Kaplan. How long have you study before taking the Nclex? I'm taking it in June 2015, but I'm finding very hard to study right now as I'm on my final practicum (I'll be done on April). Any advice is kindly appreciated :)

Hi Mari15,

NO, I haven't taken the NCLEX yet but I will soon. I have been studying since last quarter of 2014 and I am using the resources you mentioned above plus more. I cannot tell how effective these resources are yet until after I see how well I performed in the exam, also, it is important to know that everyone learns differently and what works for one may not work for another.

It is good that you are preparing for this exam even before graduation...great move! Keep it up and try to answer NCLEX style questions. The earlier you start preparation, the better! I will keep you updated with my progress!

Thanks for the reply! Yes, I agree, everyone learns differently. I hate study groups, I prefer studying on my own...lol. My school made us take the HESI exam assessment today, and I scored 1067 (recommended score for NCLEX is 900). Good start I guess....the good thing about it is that it gives you a complete report, showing the areas of weakness.

Good luck with your studies!! Let us know how it goes :)

I took the NCLX-RN yesterday. Passed with 75 questions, 30-32 SATA which kept coming in strings, loads of medication (my strength) very few delegation and Priority Qs.
