Hello there nurses!
I am a PH BSN graduate.. still hopeful...
Applied June 2014 NCLEX-CA
August 2014: Received a letter asking for additional papers:
1. Complete record of cases (minor major OB) (the 5-5-5)
2. Academic calendar
submitted
I am still waiting for their reply....
To be honest, it is emotionally draining. Frustration is higher than the ceiling. I have read SO MANY comments of others questioning us (international RNs still pursuing CA license) why we are wasting time and money when there is a lot of other states...
for me (and i know others too) heres why:
1. My husband lives works and grew up in CA (in short we cant move. no, we dont want to move)
2. The weather here is great
3. Im a NUrse.
Im a nurse. I will apply NCLEX in CA and try eventhough there have been really discouraging posts i have read and very well understand the risks of being an international graduate. I have also doubts in my application but id rather try than wonder what if all my life... I respect CA NCLEX qualifications. We went here, we adjust to what they want.
All my batchmates (from my school) are RNs here but they already took NCLEX before 2010 concurrency policy.. I graduate 2009 from a top performing school, i have masteral units, i have submitted also my masteral transcript i have written them letters and even school registration forms to prove my enrollment...
Whatever the result may, i have done my best...
So far, while i wait, i do research on LVN route, schools for deficiency classes (in case), read/study when i can and PRAY.
Anyone with the same case as i am is welcome here. PUSO parang GILAS lang mga kabayan.
Im hoping for the best for everybody, foreign or local. applicants.
soCAL pinoy applicants: be my friend
Godbless us all
I live kinda close to glendale. :) if ever you are decided to take the nclex pn and I haven't taken it yet we can be study buddies if youre interested. :) I submitted my pn application last month and still waiting for reply.
Can i have your email? if you dont mind? or message me up? im online now... I am now talking to my relative in PH to process needed documents for NCLEX-PN... there are some items in the forms i am confused. i hope you can help me....???
and yes! we can meet and study together.. finally! a study buddy yay!
Could you clarify your comment about your batchmates looking for work in CA? Are they US citizens or dual citizens or green card holders or ??
Some are already citizens while others are still looking for ways to get to california. They are still in the philippines though.
I read your previous post about the cases. It reminded me of what happened to a student who graduated 2013. He had the 3-3-3 but it did not qualify because some of his cases were done after the semester (in the summer). He had no choice but to do it in the summer because there was not that much births during the semester.
Thank you so much for your info steppybay. Btw, are you from u.s. or canada?

Sent u my email add. Sure ill share with u what I know and how I did my application. I know how frustrating it is being confused with the whole process and no one replies back. Hehe. Anything to help a fellow kababayan. :) God bless
Correct me if I'm wrong but in the US, students are not required to do 5-5-5/3-3-3 cases correct? They're not allowed to be as hands-on. And those cases we're required to have are actually beyond that of the basic nursing program being offered here in the US...so essentially, Phil grads are being deemed ineligible because of something that US-educated nurses are not even required to do?
Hi! I was in the same predicament as you a few months ago. I'm pretty sure I am eligible to take the NCLEX in California but decided against it when I learned how long I have to wait. Haha Anyway, I applied in another state and passed the first time (77 questions to boot. Yes, I'm a proud proof that the Philippine Nursing program is competitive). Relocating isn't a problem for me, I didn't want to be out of practice for too long since I know new grads and returning nurses (those who've been out of practice for more than 5 years) are having a hard time getting into hospitals. I've been out of practice for a little more than 1 year so I was in a hurry. So after that, I applied at major hospitals in 4 states, got invited for interviews, went on a multi-state trip, and now I'm relocating to Maryland.
So what am I trying to say? Do what you think is right. Don't let all the negative comments get to you. If you're unsure of something, don't rely on hearsay information. I had people tell me my Philippine nursing experience is of no value here, that the gap in my practice is most likely a death sentence, but guess what Hopkins just called (and Loyola and Northwestern and Montefiore and Baylor), and they want me. You left friends, family, and a whole life behind. You might as well make that sacrifice worth it by doing everything you can to get that dream job, wherever that may be. Best of luck to you!

I was asking because for those already a US citizen, they will have their SS# and have no problems applying into CA. But for those still not a US citizen, then applying into CA without the work authorized SS# would mean an automatic declination of their application and lose their application fees and they should start the visa process now since it can take several years to get thru the system.
I'm originally from the Phils :-)

Such cases are a PH requirement (to take the NLE) and being combined within the PH curriculum, it is a PH thing.
However, those cases (of the PH) are not a requirement at all at any US school, college or any curriculum and therefore, it's not part of any US nursing requirement.
But because it's a requirement in the Phils, then each and every student and nurse must comply with those rules and regulations as set forth by that country's standards.
Due to over crowding of the PH student population, the untimely birthing process of the pregnant human female (in which deliveries can't be set by an appointment to show up and have their babies on certain days and times), we all know it's nearly impossible to thus have them met the concurrency within a student's course schedule and why it's not "concurrent".
The solution to this whole problem is to simply "abolish" the cases in the PH, make them completely non-existent just like in the States. But NO, who else is going to do these cases for free? In the Phils, the students are just being used as it frees up the other nurses to do other tasks. Just like how in the Phils, students there have to PAY for the experience. Again, this is not done in the States but rather, one gets paid for performing such duties.
There's no way that there will be any abolishment of the cases in the Phils when the hospitals or clinics don't have to pay a peso to get this free services done. Abolish the cases and you'll see approval rate for PH applicants to get their ATT in CA will increase to nearly 100% vs today's 0.5%.
They already dropped from 5-5-5 to 3-3-3, maybe dropping to 1-1-1 will solve the crisis but I don't think the hospital system is going to be ready for that to happen.
My US educated nursing friends thinks it's a very cool idea to assist in these deliveries and experience that but at the same time, it's not such a big deal to be there either. Plus add in the fact, if a newbie US student accidently causes harm to mother or the newborn, the US hospital, the US doctor, the attending nurses, anyone involved with that mother and child patient, it will be a great cause for a major law$uit and a possible party. In the Phils, it's like "oh well, that's life, move on, next baby" and a lawsuit is like "are you kidding me, go away".

Congrats on passing the NCLEX-RN as a first-time taker! You are in the 30% bracket for an international applicant but don't forget that based on two different surveys (CA BRN own stats and the NCSBN numbers), both reports that the average international NCLEX-RN first-time passers is at best around 30%-35%, meaning 65%-70% failed in their first attempt, this is versus the US 80-85% first time passers. The repeated attempts percentages drops even more for both takers.
Congrats on your new RN job at Hopkins (and the other job offers), you must have had some years of paid hospital work experience in the PH to get in versus the many other PH applicants who don't have any experience to very little actual work history and really don't qualify for the majority of the desired new grad programs (partly due to unable to apply within the first year of their graduation date to be considered a new grad). These are the ones that for the most part are having to work at nursing homes, LTC or SNF or non-hospital jobs if they can even get an interview or are still looking (as you read in this forum of their plight).
Totally agree!!!!Just early this year 7 Filipinos in Sacramento practicing nursing already was found to have FRAUDULENT nursing documents
i think it is still posted at CA BRN website... very disappointing really.... although on the otherhand a lot of employed in the healthcare sys here in CALI are Pinoys and valued to be the best in giving care.... I only wish HONESTY and being coincides
Very informative comment thank you
Here's the link to what happened to the Guilty 7 (and there's more, as I recall in the CA BRN minutes, there's at last count 137 other PH nurses, but let's not called them "nurses")....CLICK BELOW...
This is where they will be spending their 2014 holidays for the rest of this year and into next:
