Navy NCP FY 2019

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hello,

Is anyone out there applying for the Nurse Candidate Program for FY19? I just started working on my packet last week, after I got my acceptance to an ABSN program. Started this forum for us to commiserate, share stats, and see other people's experiences while applying to the program.

Hi! I just finished my sophomore year at the University of Maryland and I'll be completing my junior and senior year at the University of Maryland School of Nursing - graduating in 2019 with my BSN. I'm very interested in the NCP, I plan on contacting my recruiter soon but I have a few questions I hope someone may be able to answer.

1. Can you request a certain hospital to go to out of the 3 after finishing ODS or if your placement fairly random?

2. What kind of training do we receive once we are placed at either Portsmouth/Walter Reed/San Diego?

3. At what point do we become a "specialized" nurse? I know what you do is ultimately determined by what the Navy what you to do but generally speaking, if you wanted to be an ICU nurse, or ER or L&D, how would that work?

4. For the application, what types of letters of recommendation are required?

Thanks for the help!

Hi, I'm almost through with the application so I can only give information based on what I have learnedfrom my recruiter and the internet (not my first hand experience)

1. You fill out a "dream sheet" of your preferences of the big 3. Your preferences will be considered but you might not go to your top choice. Although more likely to go to one of the big 3, there is also a possibility of going to a mid-sized hospital (Camp Lejeune or others but idk what they are)

2. Some Navy hospitals have the Clinical Nurse Transition Program where you rotate through different units for a period of time in order to experience different areas and I think you get to do a unit-based project. Since you'll be a freshly graduated nurse, it seems like they do a good job of getting you precepted.

3. Everything is "needs of the Navy" for what you'll ultimately be assigned, but I heard that if you let your leaders know what specialty you are interested in, they can try to work on placing you there. I've heard that many people start on med/surge or L&D.

4. You need academic and professional letters, 3 letters minimum. Personally I have 2 academic (science/nursing, 2 professional (non healthcare), and 2 healthcare (from volunteering at the hospital and CNA)

Hi! I am also interested in the NCP 2019. I start a BSN program this fall. My biggest struggle so far is getting letters of rec from professors since I have taken scattered pre-requisists all over the place and done a lot of online courses (was active duty and moved around a lot). I was a navy hospital corpsman for five years and miss the navy so much, I worked along side navy nurses and I would love to go back in as one. Thanks for starting this thread, I hope you all get accepted/commissioned.

Hi to all! I am so happy I found this thread. I started my packet a few weeks ago and I am currently waiting to hear back from my recruiter on what date I will be going to MEPS.

However, I was wondering if anyone knows the acceptance rate and what they look for exactly in an applicant? I have a 3.5 GPA, but because I pay for tuition myself by working 2 jobs, I do not have alot of leadership/extracurricular activities on my resume.Does anyone know if this will negatively impact my application? If anyone has any details I would greatly appreciate it !

Lizc, From what my recruiter told me, GPA/Interview/Statement are what weight the heaviest with selection decisions. I am going to MEPS next week, excited to get that over with (I've done it once before when I enlisted-Interesting experience lol). I only have a 3.44 GPA, very nervous about this not being competitive enough but its worth a shot!

My GPA is 3.3, Might get up to to 3.4 by the end of this semester but I'm worried about that too. My recruiter said not to worry but I know they like to sugar-coat a lot of things, so I really don't know. I feel good about how my interviews went, so holding on to hope for that! Best of luck

Hey everyone! Just completed my package! Anyone prior service military?

I'm prior active and currently a navy reservist

I'm also applying for FY 2019, I just have a few papers left to sign and then my package will be complete. I have a 3.6 GPA. My recruiter told me that they take 65 people out of 125-150 applicants.

Has anyone started nursing school?

I had one nursing class this past semester and then the program is full time for the next two years

I was notified that my kit is complete its and going through a final review to be submitted as soon as the window opens in July. Ahh!!! Recruiter says the board meets Sept-Oct and we have to wait until November for the final decision.
