Hello all! I have been avidly following previous topics about the NCP program and I wanted to start one for those of us who have recently submitted a kit for the NCP program for FY2015. I'm in the Chicago area and my kit is currently being combed over by a processor then will be shipped out for the boards- which aren't convening until Novemeber (according to my recruiter), since they wanted to have more applicants. Hopefully this will be an area to calm nerves and answer questions. Good luck to all who apply, or are thinking of applying!
I'll answer but I'm not sure how much help I'll be. Depolyment: I've heard there's always a chance, and it depends on who all at your hospital has deployed- ie they will try to NOT deploy someone again when there are others that haven't deployed yet. However, I may be entirely wrong. Grades: they are important, but there are two other things that are really taken in to account- your references, and your actual statement/how the interviewers think you will be. Which brings me to interviews: I had to interview with two nanvy nurses on base, and I'm pretty sure the rest of us that just got selected for 2015 did too. They MAY change the protocol for next year. If that is the case, then yes- you'll want your recommendations to be pristine. They asked for a range- personal/family friends, instructors, last two bosses, etc. I had some excellent letters of rec and I felt like my interviews were horrible (one nurse was just talking about the navy the whole time, and barely asked me anything, and the other was a last minute set up and he just wanted to stress that I could be deployed and die...kind of intense, but that's the military). Basically you want your application/kit to be absolutely perfect. If not- it will be kicked back, but then you can fix it and resubmit (happened to me).
I posted this comment to a similar question on a different thread.
As a current AF nurse, I think it comes down to what you value in life. You are giving up certain freedoms that you probably take for granted as a civilian. Do you need to travel greater than ~300 miles on your off days (when you aren't taking vacation)? Are you going to have an issue working the occasional unpaid (you're a salaried employee) overtime shift? Is moving every 3-5 years and deploying 6 months out of every 3 years (varies depending on your specialty...could be more or less) going to bother you? Is dealing with a gigantic, slow bureaucracy going to be a deal-breaker (getting your flu shot twice because they don't have good records or filling out the same 29B form every vacation)?
However you are getting a lot of opportunities that you wouldn't otherwise get (travel, extra responsibilities, extra education). Your co-workers are generally incredible, type A, and driven. Your room for career advancement is far greater in the military. The money is decent (especially coming from the South as a civilian nurse) once you get to the O3 or O4 range.
Find some current and former active duty nurses and ask them their opinions. I like it, but I'm single without dependents. There are far more people that want to do military nursing than there are spots right now, and I think that says a lot. It's not for everyone, but it's great for certain kinds of people.
Wow thats great every things going smoothly for you! I still have not received any emails or anything confirming my entry officially into the NCP.. Add to that my processor didn't respond to my email regarding this and i have to say it feels like i'm back in the beginning phases of this process lol..

Hi all, I'm applying for FY 16 as I'm currently finishing my second year of nursing school. One question I have is about deployment. I know that tours are about 3 years, but I thought that was primarily state-side. Do those who are naval nurses through NCP have an obligation to deploy at some time in their career or is that just some circumstances? Additionally, do any of you know someone who was accepted with a 3.1 or 3.2 GPA? I'm a double major at a very difficult university right now and have struggled to see a dramatic increase in grades since deciding I wanted to apply. I was also told my by recruiter that there wasn't an interview process for NCP so I needed all my references to be pristine to reflect who I am, is that the case? Thank you!
