Natural Consequences

Had a student (9th) spray pepper spray in their own eyes. They were then too scared to come to see me so they spent 30min in the restroom flushing their eyes with water.

Well the grapevine news travels fast and I had already seen a video of them trying to flush their eyes in the bathroom and was trying to locate them when their teacher walked them into my office.

Needless to say, they were wet from the top of their head to their shorts. Sclera and periorbital area definitely showed the pain this poor, clueless, child felt.

Good news? The AP decided natural consequences was punishment enough for this child. They 9th grader professed at least 100 times - "I will NEVER run from the police - this pain is the worst I have ever felt."

ahh, high school shenanigans.

Did the student get into trouble for bringing pepper spray to school? In my district that would be huge disciplinary consequence (suspension at the very least).

Does it make me sound old when I say kids need more natural consequences like this?

I had a kid come in asking for an ice pack for his hand. Why? I asked him. Well, because he was playing the hand slap game with his friend. "Nope. Natural consequences." I said as I pointed to the door ?

I thought for sure that they would be reprimanded at some point, nope!

So, last week I had a third grader with pepper spray in her backpack. It accidentally got bumped and went off in the classroom. Her grandmother "bought it at the Dollar Store" and put it in her bag so she could safely walk home from the bus. Ugh... One student vomited. I could feel it in my throat just walking into the room. Can you really by that at the Dollar Store? If so, there might be more incidents!

A LD came in had thrown up on the way to see me. Go through the typical questions, LD admits to eating Takis "and they usually make me sick". Well there is you natural consequence. However, called dad (CYB), he tells me to "give LD the stuff that stops constipation and leave LD in the bathroom without toilet paper." Student back in class, I am LMAO.

Sweet baby Moses. There are days I do miss high schoolers. But not when I hear a story like that.
