Hi all,
I am applying to the BSN program at national this month & wanted to start a feed to see if there's anyone else out there applying/preparing for TEAS, etc!
Hi everyoneJust wanted to introduce myself and read up on the specifics for this cohort. I'm an emotional mess so I need to figure out how to get through the next month and a half. Does anyone know what/where we can stalk when the time comes?
I am feeling deflated after today's essay but I'm going to keep hoping. I have an 86 TEAS and not too sure about my GPA but when I calculate it on a basic website calculator it says 3.69. I don't quite understand the quarter unit thing yet and I took most of my pre reqs at Mesa so I'm not sure if that weighs into a different gpa or not. If anyone wants to calculate it for me that would be great! ha. I took Anatomy lecture/lab at Mesa and got an A (4 units), Physiology lab/lecture at Mesa got an A (4 units). Micro at Mesa and got a B 5 units (I'm so bitter about it). Stats at National and got an A (3 semester units???).
I will say I am not a strong writer and I did not utilize the writing lab so now my confidence is minimal. If I did the math correctly that means I need at least a 3.5 on the essay to even have a chance.
gpA 3.69/4 X .4 = 0.369
TEAS 86/100 x .4 = 0.344
My prompt was the one about the program being rigorous with little time for personal activities and what will make me successful in the program.
Hey there! My scores are very similar to yours. I also wrote the proctored essay on 03/01 and got the exact same prompt as you. This is my second time applying, so I completely understand your frustration and anxiety.
As Tom Petty said, "The waiting is the hardest part!" LOL... And, you don't have any control over it so try not to stress yourself out. We should all try and remember that we have given it our best shot and be proud of ourselves for that!. All we can do now is hope and pray for a great outcome!
ATI teas VI manual and I purchased the practice tests. The manual is very overly simplified, you will have to know what's in there, but in much greater detail.
I took one practice test a month out as a pretest and I scored about 78-80. I reviewed my weak areas according to the breakdown, and retook the practice test one week out from my teas date; I scored a 93. On the practice test I scored:
Science:96
Reading:96
Math:85
English:91
On the real teas i scored:
Science:80
Math:100
Reading:89
English:96
So as you can see, the practice test reflected my strengths in reverse. The science was definitely more difficult that I had anticipated. I went in a little too overconfident in that area because of that reason.
I had a similar experience with the TEAS vs the practice exams. All my scores were flipped too... but I got a pretty decent score so I can't complain too much.
Hmmm... Did the proctored essay HAVE to have exactly 5 paragraphs?I only had a 4 p9374869903502669244895aragraph essay that was ~2 pages.
It was pretty well written... but only 4 paragraphs.
I think they are very particular. The closest we have come to knowing the actual criteria for grading essays was posted by someone else in this thread who worked with a previous grader of the essays. Even after I took my essay, I still was not able to find out why points were taken off. It's kind of an enigma.
When I went to orientation, the thing I took away was if you have 2 strong criteria and one weak one, you will get into the program. So if you have a solid gpa and a good teas score, you probably don't have to be as worried about the essay. The essay, however, is a great opportunity for anyone that needs to make up points in one of the other areas so they can be a competitive candidate for the program.
This is kind of a relief because I am one of those people. My TEAS score is good at 89.3 and I am confident my essay will be good, but my GPA is lacking only a 2.953. I got a C in micro and only B and B+ in A&P I & II so I thinks it a long shot unless I retake mircro but I wont count myself out just yet.

Yeah, you are in good shape still. Using the last cohort's cutoff of 84, you would need a 4.7 minimum on your essay and you're in. If the cutoff is lower than 84 there might be more wiggle room there.
Particular? Oh darn... I should have paid attention to the directions...What minimum essay score do you think I need to get in?
I got a 91% on the TEAS and a 3.9XX GPA.
I am a very weak essay writer and I am hoping for a 3.5...
Thanks, Mr. Edwino
You would only need an essay score of 2.1 I order to hit that 84 cutoff. Unless you absolutely blew the essay, you'll get in easily with your scores. Now keep in mind, I'm using an arbitrary cutoff based on the last cohort. It could be higher or lower, but cohort 54 has been the highest yet, and the trend is that the cutoff keeps getting higher. Best of luck!
You have great scores! Mine are 3.7 gpa and 90 TEAS. My goal is to be accepted in this cohort and not be an alternate because I want to start ASAP, I saw that last cohort acceptance cut off was 85.09 and for alternate 84.08, so I need above a 3 on my essay to guarantee that. Good luck!!!
