National Registration

Published

Hi, as you know, our registration will be united as national registration.

I am just wondering how you think about the natioanl registration.

Personally, I think it is owesome. If I want, I can go to other states any time without endorsement.

I got some information re: national registration and hope you read and understand it thoroughly :-)

Wow, I am getting excited!! However, I have heard we need to maintain our professional portfolio well...

Cheers,

I totally understand where you are coming from scrubby, I suppose the reason I feel strongly about it is because I only finished my post grad in mental health last year and was so pleased to be finally recognised as a RMHN and now I wont be, oh well I had a year of it lol.

I asked the NMBWA when I registered here in Perth, and the recruiter there thought the new fee would be about $500-600. I said what if you have just got registration for another state, do you have to pay the $500 or whatever on top of that? She didn't know as those details hadn't been worked out yet (about 5 months ago).

Wow, thats a huge jump, surely it wouldn't go up that much.

I hope not cos I will be struggling to pay it.

Current registration lasts for the rest of the year, so that's one thing.

I expect a jump, but not that much - the Victorian fee for 2010 was around $90 if paid on time; I can't believe it'll increase by over 500%

Don't know...it may cost a lot to implement all these changes.

Am only quoting the nurse recruiter, but she was a bit vague.

Everything seems to go up for nurses - I paid $240 for my WA registration, plus fees to update first aid, get a WWCC & police clearance (that was about $120 combined). Half of the fee of the $240 was an administration fee alone! Ridiculous if you ask me.

At the recent RCNA nursing expo, they said that if you join up the 3Lp thing that counts to ur 20hrs, and any inservices, um like workshops count, and even being a member of the RCNA, and reading their stuff they send out to u is included.

Check the website, they clearly explain what happens if you just renewed your state registration, and when it runs out.

I sincerely doubt it will be $500 or more. I'd guess $200-300.

I agree, it will make life easier for those wanting to work interstate. I work in a position where I've had to maintain 4 separate registrations, simply because Queensland shares a border with those states, and therefore there is a potential i may need to provide nursing care to someone from another state. So this will definitely make things easier.

However, I do have a few problems - firstly they have kept very quiet regarding the cost of the annual renewal fee. That makes me worried.

I also feel the 20 hours training per year is a big ask. Actually, no, thats not quite true - 20 hours is ok I guess. But for those of us who have endorsements (eg nurse/midwives) we have to do 20 hours PER endorsement. So that means 40 hours of training/education. And I feel THAT is a lot!

It will be interesting to see how things go. My guess is the fees will rise dramatically within the first 2 years. I saw a similar thing happen in New Zealand - when they first brought in compulsory professional portfolios, the registration fee almost doubled, and they justified the cost saying it costs more now that they have to do so many audits of portfolios each year. (which, gosh, was THEIR idea!) LOL

Hi,

The 20 hours is professional development not necessarily education and training...easy peasy. It could be an article that you read. It could be a discussion with someone else when you learned something. It could be tertiary studies. It just has to be relevant to your practice. Engaging in this forum counts. You just need to keep a log of dates and how long. It's no big deal. We got the low down today from the NSW Nurses Association. There is no CPD points required; it is just hours. They include your mandatories etc. Portfolios are not mandatory. It starts from the date the registration kicks in and is not retrospective. Hope that clears things up.

Cheers

Just remember esp with the 3LP stuff- that the CPD has to be relevant to your area of practice. RCNA is $400 a year to be a member- I can't afford that!

Rumours are going around about the $500 fee- will be around $120 next year, but who knows after that!

There are tons of info out there about portfolios- just reading the articles will contribute to your CPD hrs. Most nurses who are even slightly keen will have no problems getting these hr up. Even preceptoring a student counts! They will be looking though for a wide range of evidence ie reading 20hrs of articles wont cut it, and you have to reflect on how the learning has impacted your practice, so keep a little in-service journal or something like that.

Is anyone out there considering using a e-portfolio?

To the Co2 emmission person- it clearly states in the framework you must keep a portfolio. Check out the website!

I would imagine if you had any sense, you would keep records of your CPD. Haven't all rego boards been expecting this of nurses for the past 2-3 years, so everyone should have the hang of it anyway. This is not rocket science...every public workplace has PD's going every week in something or other....points If you don't understand research....more points....receiving and reading the ANJ....more points, if doing post grad....lots of points. Same as it always has been, just like the song. :)
