1) I try to do a few things. I create art. Whether it is watercolor, pencil or pastels. Most of my vision comes from my head. I also read. When I get into a good book, I can read for hours. My imagination runs along with the story line. I also garden. But last but not least, I spend time with my Grandchildren and my dogs. All of them make me laugh, cry and teach!
2) Empathy. I was born with a hereditary autoimmune illness. At 5 and 24 I contracted Guillain Barre Syndrome. I was a Dairy Farmer for 16 years. When the price of milk crashed in the early nineties, I had to work off the farm. I was a CNA in a nursing home. I knew I could do more than that and thought about becoming a nurse. I asked my MD what he thought as I do not have a spleen. He thought it was a great idea as I could be empathetic and knew where patients were coming from. So I became a RN. I learned that farming helped me more than just the Science. I could read people by their demeanor and actions, as I read the animals I cared for. I was more understanding of their feelings, their fears, and questions. I cared for the whole person. In recent years, as a patient in the hospital I see that the nurses are too busy to care for the person as much, what with computers, and all the legal requirements. It is sad, because they do not have time to get to know the patients.
1. What are some things you do to give yourself time to think and breathe? Mindfulness meditation, Yoga, daily inspirational quotes and reading, music
2. What do you think is the most important attribute of today's professional case manager? Compassion, Kindness and ability to listen without judgement
A case manager must be able to empathize with their patients to establish a meaningful relationship and behave compassionately as a patient advocate, which in turn, will likely motivate all parties to work towards the desired outcome/goal. Stay positive.
I meditate for about 5 minutes and turn on my essential oils diffuser when I feel a trigger that may overwhelm me. It doesn't hurt to freshen up with an antistress Eucalyptus Mint spray and lotion...me time?
1. Some of the things that I may due to take some time to think and breathe, may involve carrying out some of the self-care activities, I process with my client's. For example, I may pause all of my work activities to take my dog for a walk and enjoy some fresh air. I may also structure a game night with my family, asking them to cut off all electronic devices and enjoy a night of family activities (e.g., playing board games, etc.). I feel that you should practice what you preach and what could be a better way to do this then bringing ourselves into the moment by carrying out a self-care activity.
2. I think that the most important attribute of a professional case manager, is their ability to show compassion while working with client's and their family's. This involves their ability to show empathy (e.g., their ability to place themselves in another's shoes) as well and their ability to display emotional intelligence (e.g., self awareness, self management, social awareness, and relationship management).
1. I like to exercise followed by meditation. I like to escape through my VR which takes me to sceneries in different areas of the world all while improving my health. I like to follow this with a quick meditation to just clear my mind.
2. Compassion. We need to treat every patient with compassion and without judgment no matter what circumstance, socioeconomic status, race, or cultural difference they may have. We must be aware of our unintentional biases and strive for the best outcome for each and every patient.

I take the scenic route to my field appointments, crochet..and listen to podcasts
2. What do you think is the most important attribute of today’s professional case manager?
Having Integrity and being a strong advocate are the most important attributes, by far. Being detail oriented, flexible, empathetic and effective are also important along with excellent problem solving skills.
What are some things you do to give yourself time to think and breathe?
I go to my quiet space and pray and release . That may be my office or my closed in patio.
What do you think is the most important attribute of today's professional case manager? I think the most important attribute is being Determined. In this profession, you run into many obstacles and road blocks trying to get what is needed for your patients. I see many case managers seeking resources and suggestions from other case momagers, through social media platforms, working with various organizations, and just working tirelessly trying to make sure that the patient's necessities are provided for. They make it happen even when there seemed to be no solution.
1. What are some things you do to give yourself time to think and breathe?
listening to music, meditation, enough of sleep, look on the sky and threes ( Mother Nature is soothing)
also I find my mind is clear when I continue to learn, love to read new research and innovation
2. What do you think is the most important attribute of today's professional case manager?
In todays busy life time is challenging. Sometimes it’s might be hard to devote the same amount of time for each patient, so I would say the most important is be well organized and wisely manage the time so you fully devoting yourself to a patient, as well as to be a good listener, be a patient advocate, and promote the safest discharge plan to prevent further readmissions. And yes, be rememberable by the patient and family…
Today's nurse case managers need to advocate and educate more than anything for their patients. With shortages in the hospital and homecare agencies, patients are being discharged too soon and there are very limited home care resources for therapy and wound care. Education is key when patients are discharged home, and we need to pay attention to both cognitive and physical functioning and align care as necessary. We need to focus on the possible factors that may be present during the post discharge period of vulnerability to ensure a safe and successful discharge
I do try to follow the advise I give to others for stress reduction. Everything from short meditations to breathing and stretching. The one thing that always works for me almost instantly is a reset with music. It is so simple to adapt music to your immediate need. Your computer or phone are always ready. Youtube, Spotify, your favorite app. Need to focus? Choose music for concentration. Feeling stressed? - Soothing music or sounds like babbling brook are there for you. It can be as simple as a song that bring back a happy memory. Try music for an instant reset. Enjoy!

As a nurse we all go through rough days. We may take things personally. We may make mistakes. We all need to take care of ourselves. In my spare time to rejuvenate is to spend time with family. Enjoy the outdoors. Love to watch my video of Lake Michigan of waves crashing. It’s peaceful. I love the beach. This video I watch when I have had a rough day. I save it in my phone. It helps to ease the anxiety of the day. I love to sing especially show tunes from musicals. My stress level goes way down. The most important thing is holding hands with my husband because I know it will be okay. This is how I move to the next day and not burn out.
