Nasty feet

The other day we had a new admit from the ER; she was not remarkable in any particular way. I came into the room as the the tech was covering her with the sheet. I got a set of vitals and a quick assessment. As I was getting to the 'toe' in head to toe, I lifted the sheets to expose her feet. My first surprise was she still had on her shoes. Oh well, not so strange I thought. I asked "Can I take off your shoes now that you are in bed? "Sure" she replied. Second big surprise, the most God awful smell this side of C-dif! One foot had on a nasty filthy sock that had not seen water since the last rainstorm, while the other was sockless. That particular piggy was covered with crud and what looked like some type of crushed dried vegetation. I asked her if she had been walking around barefoot and she looked at me in a puzzled way. I said "you have some of Mother Earth down here". She smiled and I scraped away the crud and removed the single sock. A couple of bath wipes were employed to remove the first two layers of offending stink-O.

Got any good foot stories? (I know you do)

This wins the Nasty Feet Disgusting Award!!!

Yes !!! I won something !!!

Not nasty to me, very fascinating though.

Clinical rotation MED/SURG floor geriatric population. Man with a gangrene right great toe, scheduled for amputation for 2 days later. Until then, we were dressing the toe with sterile gauze and painting iodine on it. I performed the TX. When I moved his toe it CRUNCHED, but he stated it was not painful. It was actually fairly close to autoamputation, as it was hanging by a thread, so to speak, at surgery time.

Many times we resorted to washing feet with shaving cream after repeated soap and water washes just wouldn't cut the smell. Left those puppies fresh as a daisy.

When I was working psych, had a young guy who wore these leather boots ALL the time, WITHOUT socks. When he would take them off, I kid you not, you could smell his feet as soon as you walked on the unit.

I worked as a Public Health Nurse in a clinic that served 90% homeless people for 4 years

A lot of professional (and not-so-professional) hockey players skate without socks -- allows them a more sensitive connection to the ice is what they claim. The stench of hockey gear is enough to compromise the strongest of stomachs!

I'm not one to believe the US gov't should be providing universal healthcare (can't think of anyone LESS able to competently manage such a chore), but I do think that anyone over 60yo should get several free pedicures per year at taxpayer expense. Just think of how many fewer diabetic amputations and hospitalizations and prescriptions and home health nursing visits would be necessary (paid for by Medicaid and Medicare, of course) -- the program could pay for itself in the first year!

And I'm anxiously awaiting mclennan's contributions -- this should be a fun thread!
