Patience
Wealth of knowledge
Ability to read people, both students and patients. I love watching how different nurses handle challenging patients, and I learn a lot from it. It's come in handy when I've worked with patients the nurses are scared of, and I have the patient eating out of my hand! :) I also appreciate it when the nurse recognizes that I challenge myself, but I also know when to say I need help, and they'll step back and let me take the reigns. I feel much more confident in my abilities because of this. Constructive criticism is an important part of this, too- I want to know where I need to improve.

Hello, I've been an RN for 7 years and for the past several years I've been precepting senior nursing students during their leadership semester. I really enjoy having the opportunity to pass on my knowledge and give back to the profession that has given me so much.
I've attended several workshops related to precepting, do a ton of CEUs related to precepting every year, and maintain "preceptor" status at the hospital I work at. I not only precept nursing students, but new employees as well.
My question for you, nursing students, if you could name 3 qualities that you'd want your preceptor to have, what would they be? This is a general question, and there is no right or wrong answer.
The top three I can think of that I'd want in a preceptor are,
1) Knowledgeable and Skilled
2) Positive Attitude
3) Good and Open Communication
What do you think the top 3 qualities are that you'd want in a preceptor?
